Discussion: Family Dog That Jumped Fence Shot During Child's Birthday Party

He was perfectly within his rights if the dog attacked. Believe it or not people, a dog can kill you. It can cripple you for life, too. It can lay you up for weeks or months. I swear, dogs have more rights than people these days. Barking dogs are a huge problems, too.

This is what will continue until we find a way for background checks to include morons.

Well, to be fair, the dog was wearing a little doggy hoody and was named Skittles…

NCsteve is exactly right. Too many people buy a gun and then seek that first proud moment when they get to justify using it. For some it’s a teenager on his way home from the convenience store, for some it’s a knock at the door after midnight, for some it’s a dog in the street.

For the rest of us, it’s insanity.

Absolutely. It’s called brandishing in most places, and it’s a crime. Evidently Colorado doesn’t having an explicit brandishing law but it does provide for a felony menacing charge if you point a deadly weapon at someone. If he wasn’t being seriously threatened himself, like grievous injury or death, he’s in trouble. Or at least I damn well hope he is.

Does this look like a pitbull to you?

The dog’s name was Clifford. :frowning:

Clifford was a 4-year-old chocolate Labrador/collie mix. He was adopted from a shelter about two years ago and hadn’t had any problems or previous incidents, Emily Martinez said.

You used the magic word “if”. We don’t know if the dog attacked or not therefore we don’t know if the shooting was justified or not.

I can just see the ad now, to the visitors to the USA: “YES, come to America, spend all your money here; and then, if you say anything negative about the USA, you will be shot, legally! Have a nice day”.

That was my response.

The first thing to do was for several of the parents to take out their cells and film and photo this asshole while someone else calls the police. Big enough group and he ain’t going no where until the law arrives.

Unfortunately, you’ve got to conclude that the dog that was shot had jumped the fence (probably no more than 4’) before and that the family was aware of this.

I’m opposed to the death penalty, but people who are cruel to animals would make me reconsider.

Yet another situation that would have been improved by more guns on the scene.

Did you forget the part where the guy who shot the dog started aiming at people from the party?

If a stranger kills my dog and starts pointing the gun at my family and I own a firearm I’m telling someone to call the cops and I’m getting my gun to make sure my people aren’t killed while waiting for the police. It’s cool if you’re a pacifist and rather be further victimized by assholes like that nut but we all aren’t going to accept that happening.

And while he starts pointing the gun at you and your family you do nothing. Self-defense is out of the question. If the guy is nuts, which is what he sounds like, just let him start shooting your kids. You sound as crazy as that ahole gunning down their dog.

In case you haven’t realized it, there are millions of households with firearms who never have any incidents. Just like millions of homes have pools where no kids drown.

You don’t know the dog did anything before unless you’re psychic. We do know the man intentionally passed by their home and had confrontations regarding their dog barking, yet he is not a neighbor.

actually, outing yourself as a gun owner, you’re the one just as dangerous as he is in this circumstance. Nothing like escalating the situation by getting your gun out.

I didn’t say the dog did anything. But if he/she got out this time, chances are he/she has gotten out before. Dogs are wont to do that. You leave a medium-sized dog unattended, and see if he can’t hop a 4’ fence, unless he’s old or overweight.

Think you need to cut back on the caffeine or find a pro-gun site to post that kind of a response. Guns never solve anything.

I was expecting a pit bull, but a Lab? A breed that is notoriously friendly???

This guy is nuts. Pull his permit and arrest him.

I beg to differ about the guy being within his rights. Brandishing a gun and threatening to shoot people is not a legal activity almost everywhere in America. Legal to carry … yes…not legal to point a gun at people in this situation. I can say that had this microbrain shot my dog I’d sic the cops on him for animal cruelty, disturbing the peace, attempted murder (brandishing that gun) and any other charge I could conjure up. And after that I sue his ass into next week. In short I’d make his life as miserable as possible. I hope Ms Martinez does what I outlined.

Apparently there were no witnesses. Why do you think he was within his rights?

Why do you assume the fence was 4’ high?

Bingo.

Or a concealed carry permit or a gun for that matter.
