I feel this way because Limbaugh doesn’t pretend to any degree of impartial analysis—he’s a proudly bigoted asshole who’s rooting openly for one side, and he doesn’t attempt to hide behind a veneer of intellectual credibility or “balance.”
Because NPR gives him a megaphone, millions of dutiful liberal listeners across the country—like my late mother, for example—blindly assume that Brooks offers truly dispassionate opinions, and in so doing he fools and bamboozles people who aren’t going to alternative news sources into believing that he’s describing objective reality. He’s a fake. A fraud. A poser. Worse, he’s a poseur.
Just to follow up on one of Plucky’s points: “…They’ve treated blatant racist rhetoric as valid criticism…” I googled “David Brooks criticizes Republicans for racist rhetoric” to see if David Brooks has even once openly criticized the Republican Party as a party for the constant stream of ignorant and virulently racist bile that’s been aimed at Barack Obama and his family since he announced he was seeking the Dem nomination without simultaneously criticizing Democrats for some imaginary shortcomings on race.
Good point as once he’s gone, they will launch a new series of attacks on President Hillary Clinton, all the while bemoaning how well they liked and got long with Barrack Obama. Yeah…sure! l
He didn’t mention Jeb! or Kasich, I don’t think; in poker, that’s called a tell. He didn’t mention Fiorina, one of our leading pronographers, either, but I think that’s because even he can see the fork in her back.
Just as a refresher…Remember how often from the very beginning they put him down for the hundreds of thousands of Germans and other Europeans that came out to see him as an inspiration to the world. Not a nice word was said about that from any fucking Republican or Republican partisan hack in the media.
After what King George the Lesser did to this country, putting our standing in the world below that of a common slug…it was such a relief to see we were no longer a hated pariah in the world anymore. There was finally some hope in the country that we would be welcome again by other nations, not necessarily by their elected officials, but by the common people that mattered most. Eventually, those elected officials also got on board and our standing was restored as a world leader. We could be trusted again.
Not one of those fucking Pukes ever wanted to admit it. All they cared about was that Netanyahu didn’t care for Obama…because Jesus, Judeo-Christian (or Christian for those that don’t speak coded bullshit) or some such ridiculous shit. They invented “the other” to dismiss President Obama’s legitimacy to cloud the affect he had, not only on this country with his popular support, but the world. Thankfully, “the world” didn’t fall for that crap. Sadly, some idiots in this country did.
Yeah, no. Its false equivalency “both sides do it” spouting enablers like him that have provided the GOP with the cover it needed to go as far over the deep-end as it has. Its a two prong problem with the Rushs pushing conservatives ever rightward while the Brooks provide a “reasonable” face to allow “independents” and the middle to delude themselves into thinking that the Republicans haven’t become the radical far-right nut house they are today.
David Brooks exists to enable the right wing. He mediates the right wing rhetoric into something palatable enough to let educated, urban Republicans who would otherwise reject the Nugent/Limbaugh/Steve King wing remain in denial about their party.
Yeah, it’s a huge, huge failing on the part of the ‘respectable’ right. What I always heard was pouting about “every time you complain about this President you get called a racist.” It would have been much hipper and more effective to say “We acknowledge the existence of and unreservedly disavow the elements on the right who attack the President based on racial animus, but we will of course vigorously debate policy.” That was a big mistake, and I can only imagine that it set back minority outreach for a generation.
Ah yes, a case of political, “don’t know what you got until it’s gone” -ism
I bet there are a whole cadre of ‘thinking-mans conservatives’ who will now tie President Obama with President Reagan, as another tactic to get some sort of monument to the latter.
Oh look, I get to use the same quote over and over. Eventually people will start to understand.
“Don’t trust the cannibal just ’cos he’s usin’ a knife and fork!”
The POINT being that they’re the same thing, it’s just Rush is open about it, Brooks isn’t. They’re both the same poison. They’re both working the same angle, and, most importantly, with the same objective.
It’s a very Southern thing, in my experience. It’s not what you say that matters, it’s how you say it. Feel free to advocate for genocide, just don’t stray past ‘gosh darn’ on the harsh language scale.
