And I have no doubt, that even after the acrimony of 2008, Michelle will support Hillary.
It is becoming obvious that Obama has been more of the statesman, for all his faults, than any of the current crowd of narcissists. And yes, I’m lumping Hillary into this, along with Sanders.
I’m disappointed in this current crop. I’m still wondering where the truly good leaders are. We can’t be this morally and ethically bankrupt and leadership-challenged in this country, can we? I almost don’t want the answer to that question.
I sometimes suspect his uttering “both sides” is in a way to ward off his identity crisis, as is often the case with almost extinct moderate Republicans.
I am not buying this horse crap
On one hand Brooks says
“I’ve been disappointed by aspects of his presidency. … But over the course of this campaign it feels as if there’s been a decline in behavioral standards across the board,…”
In the next sentence
“…lacking five character traits that we’ve “taken too much for granted” from Obama: “basic integrity,” “sense of basic humanity,” soundness” in decision making, “grace under pressure,” and “resilient sense of optimism.”
So it took you eight freakin years to come out and say this. Not once did you feel the necessity to educate your fellow (asshole) conservatives in the house and senate about the need to at least reciprocate half the time.
Not even the moderate republicans wanted to work with Obama - How many times did they call him a liar, you knew that all the time but kept quiet.
Unbelievable. I suspect we’ll see a lot more mea culpas like this over the next few months.
…and here is yet another of the famous Brooks examples of “false equivalency.” There simply is no comparison with the tone and substance of the leading Republican candidates and the leading Democratic candidates yet Brooks still manages to paint them all with the same broad brush.
When he does this over and over again it becomes clear it is likely that he is trying to lower the bar of acceptability. He is doing this so that people will either drop out of participation altogether or they will vote for the Republican out of the misguided belief that they are all scumbags.
Shame on David Brooks.
Unbelievable. After pledging to make President Obama fail and Congressional Republicans doing everything they could to make it happen, we get this from a key mouthpiece of the GOP. Just how scared must they be about Cruz, Trump, Christie and Rubio becoming their standard bearer? When Faux News starts to panic, we will know this is for real.
No you won’t you liar. You’ll double down on Hillary just like every other liar in the Right Wing Bullshit Machine!
And don’t forget Little Luke Russert! He loves to utter that “Both Sides Do It” crap as well!
Brooks is an old-school conservative, the kind we old folks used to call “the loyal opposition,” the kind who voted for Eisenhower AND FDR, for Reagan AND JFK.
All their people are certainly scumbags. Clinton and Sanders are smart, determined and dedicated public servants that clearly have fought all their lives for American workers and against corporate greed and government corruption.
Brooks isn’t fooling any of the Republicans who now call themselves Independents much less the Silent Majority that voted twice for President Obama. You can’t trust or respect GOP candidates and incumbents.
I don’t think many Republicans of Brook’s ilk voted for progressive Eisenhower. They were Joe McCarthy fans.
This guy is a symptom of, basically, everything that’s wrong with this country.
Who gives a fuck what he thinks?
“Obama radiates an ethos of integrity, humanity, good manners and elegance that I’m beginning to miss, and that I suspect we will all miss a bit, regardless of who replaces him,” he concluded."
LET ME SHOUT THAT FROM THE ROOFTOPS. I have been missing him since the last SOU
Exactly. He has been fair over the years, like him or not
I don;t like him either but comparing him to Rush is over the top
Well, in fairness to you, who could have possibly foreseen the cataclysmically horrifyingly awful slate of people running for the Republican nomination to whom he must be compared?
And it’s classic Bobo: what he’s really saying is “holy crap the Republican slate is terrifyingly awful and inconceivably unpresidential” but, being Bobo, he has to say “and the Democratic candidates are just as bad” even though his explanation for why rings with the hollowness of the poorly hidden intellectual decay he personifies.
Oh, please. The man’s got two schticks: the kind of pseudo-intellectual meanderings Peggy Noonan would write if she had twenty more IQ points and a pitcher fewer martinis and political columns that tie a few rational points together with an utterly ridiculous conclusion unconnected to the rational points that’s really just an O’Reilly truthy truth of the gut dressed up as erudition. The man’s an intellectual fraudster who is simultaneously the first victim of his con.
Here’s the thing…no matter how much Brooks and those like him have bad-mouthed and tried to denigrate this President over the years, they’ve never been able to catch that special lightning in a bottle the way President Obama has. This President has been an inspiration and a model to many, whether they care to admit it or not.
Brooks and his ilk never wanted to understand that, never appreciated what real integrity meant to the office or what it really looked like (their guys in office were always severely challenged in that area). Brooks like most partisan political hacks too often refused to give credit where credit was due.
Most of these Pukes now, want someone in their party to be the new Obama, and they’ve even tried to use his campaign success as a model for how they’ll be able to achieve a success of their own should they get to a general election. Everybody knows that’s how they’ll etch-a-sketch themselves. They’ve always been envious of the way President Obama has been able to rally the public to his side before being elected and once in office.
They also can’t quite get their heads around how he’s managed to keep his powder dry under their most insane, hostile and targeted sneering and vilification …He’s remained No Drama Obama for the most part, for 7 fucking years, throwing in a sense of good humor as an added benefit.
Meanwhile, the Party of constant insults, low standards and crude bigotry will never understand how off-base they’ve been until they recognize they have a real problem on their hands, one of their own making, and decide to clean up their ugly and divisive act…and that isn’t likely to happen any day soon.
Thank you for a wonderful reply, a very accurate one also. The entire press has been anti Obama since his first day in the White House and before!!
It’s not possible to watch the main stream news, especially ABC’S Jon KRL nd not witness that smirk everytime he mentions the president’s name… It’s absolutely impossible to watch a single Sunday morning news program!!
You have to give Brooksie some slack. He has no internal yardstick by which to recognize and measure such things as integrity, humanity, grace under pressure, and resilient optimism. He was quite unable to recognize these things in Obama until the 2016 slate of Republican candidates for the office made its appearance. Suddenly, even Brooks can realize that Obama is head and shoulders above all of these douphoi.
