Discussion: Evangelical College Terminates Professor Who Organized Muslim Solidarity Protest

Discussion for article #244324

I’m interested to hear what they consider cause. It sounds like the deck is stacked though- 9 faculty chosen by the school president, and the BoD having the final say. If the Board wants her gone, it doesn’t matter what the faculty says.

I’m thinking now the only real issue left here is the amount of money Wheaton’s going to have to pay Hawkins to settle her wrongful firing lawsuit.

It’s like this is some sort news stupid game in Illinois; like you’re not a ‘real’ post-secondary educational institute until you’re paying out a judgment for breach of contract.

The theological nitpickers are missing the big picture, just like they (pharisees?) did in the gospel stories.

This case was always about her statement and never about the hijab that TPM likes keep stating it as (even with the pic with this article).

When you sign a contract to teach at one of these schools, tenure means nothing when you break the religious oaths that you must take to work there. What she did was break the oath by how some of the board of regents read it.

It is sad, but this is how it is.

On the same note, I would like to see universities fire faculty, no matter how much tenure they have, for sleeping with their students.

“well we are a small Christian college and though we believe in the Bible’s tenets, we are a small Christian college and we try to stay out of political discussion. After all we are a small Christian college and politics and religion don’t mix well…”

“At the time, Wheaton administrators issued a statement saying that the “theological implications” of her comments would need to be reviewed before her suspension was reconsidered.”

You’re in luck! Infallible review complete:

“Jesus Christ, Jehovah, Allah. These are all names employed to describe an entity that is distinctly the same across the world. For centuries, blood has been needlessly shed because of the desire to segregate our faiths. This, however, should be the very concept which unites us as people, as nations, and as a world bound by faith. Together, we can bring about an unprecedented age of peace, all we need to achieve such a state is respect each others beliefs, for we are all children of God regardless of the name we choose to address him by. We can accomplish miraculous things in the world by merging our faiths, and the time for such a movement is now. No longer shall we slaughter our neighbors over differences in reference to their God.”
-Pope Francis (yet again speaking sense to hateful morons…)

“Jones’ notice stated that he sought Hawkins’ termination on the basis of an ‘unqualified assertion of religious solidarity with Muslims and Jews’….”

What’s America coming to when a tax-exempt institution can’t fire the uppity help, for claiming G-d loves Muslims and Jews, without folks making a fuss?

WAWJS?

(Whose ass would Jesus sack?)

And by “theological implications” they meant “does this ‘same God’ stuff harm our attempts to divide and conquer…our recruitment and indoctrination efforts…and how?”

This has these fuckers in a tizzy over BRANDING…nothing more, nothing less.

Then they probably should not have a Politics and International Relations Department. The odds of some faculty member from that department saying something political is 100%.

Whaaaaaaa???

I wish I owned a university. I’d show these holier-than-thou asshole bigots. They are trying to strip her of her tenure over this is bullshit. Unbelievable. They offer to take her back, but then use retribution by taking away her security in the process. What good is tenure at this piss poor college anyway if they play by these bullshit made-up ruies? I’d leave too. The game they play is rigged.

Another Christian demonstrating that Christian tolerance and love.

Pretty sure quoting the Pope (any Pope, but this one in particular) would do more to hurt her chances than help with the faculty/board of an evangelical college.

"though having that would be nice, as a small Christian college, politics and religion clearly don’t mix well. So because this is a small Christian college that doesn’t engage in politics, we respectfully decline that opportunity. "

Good!

Wheaton College of Illinois = SUCKS BIG TIME & run by ASSHOLES

a small minded narrow minded bigoted & unchristian Evangelical Christian College.
This ugly act will probably not cause any of their potential students to turn away - because this is the kind of twisted ‘hate think’ that this institution has been spewing for years.

Wheaton College in Massachusetts = FANTASTIC SCHOOL !!!

located between Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. Provides great education and welcoming environment - delivers opportunity for all students … and is not run by assholes.

Private school. As long as the firing is consistent with her employment contract provisions, i.e., if the contract allows revocation of tenure if a professor expresses heretical based on the school’s retroactively determined dogma, she doesn’t have a case.

Almost all universities do - it’s one thing that will get you shown right to the door & out.

Indeed. I have a friend of staff at the latter, and as Chicago natives it gets her goat when she’s linked to this cesspool.

Indeed. I like to get into the scrum, so I spend some time on Faux News’ KKKomment boards most days and they’re either entirely dismissive of him (“he’s a fake pope”) or are mindlessly livid about him and think he’s an apostate heretic witch who should be burned alive ISIS-style. I’ve said for a long time that I’ve been waiting for them to start a movement to “take our religion back.”
