Discussion: EPA To Unveil New Plan Which Reverses Obama-Era Coal Power Plant Regulation

Coal-burning, right up there with all out thermonuclear war, is a bad idea. Given our large coal-burning legacy and the damage it has inflicts, this would be the time to ban the stuff outright.

Emissions from burning a lump of coal or a gallon of gas has an effect on the climate 100,000 times greater than the heat given off by burning the fossil fuel itself. And, the heat trapped by those emissions can be felt within just a few months of the fuel being burned. Burning fossil fuels is the globe’s biggest source of human-caused greenhouse gases and the primary cause of climate change.

“The EPA reportedly plans to argue that the Obama-era regulation would illegally regulate the power sector, and that the costs of compliance would be insurmountable.”

Short term greed, long term consequences.

IF the issue is to keep coal alive then, no. Rump’s EPA can allow coal power plants to run in the middle of downtown Boston and “roll coal” in the Back Bay and it’s not going to save the industry.

IF that’s what this is about. If this is just a “screw you” to Pres. Obama, then that’s kinda different.

This is (I think) mostly a resource suck – it’s going to cost lots of litigation money and attention to fight the new regs, and meanwhile all kinds of other anti-enforcement actions may sneak through.

They’re going to kill us all.

If we adopted all of the tenets of the Paris climate treaty and doubled them tomorrow, it would be decades before we would notice any improvement in the climate. This is more important for what it says about Trump attitude (and, by default, America’s attitude) than for what it will actually do to the environment. At this point, there is no solution - there is only attitude, effort and prayers for some kind of technological improvements.

Great discussion on this topic on Chris Hayes Why is this Happening podcast with Andrew Revkin (Aug 14th episode) - realistic look at current climate change realities.

It’s like this admin. intentionally does whatever is wrong, or harmful or provocative. What’s next, an executive order federally protecting the kicking of puppies?

Be interesting to see the cost in peoples and public health vs. savings for the power companies.

What’s next with these assholes? Eliminating seat belts from cars because it adds costs to the price of a car?

The thing is car companies brag and make it a huge selling points that theirs are safer, pollute less, get better gas mileage, cost less per mile, etc.

They didn’t always, but sure, they do now.

Coal is an economic turkey. Are there any rich people who want to invest their own money in one of these new or used coal burners? How many savvy Wall Street investors hear opportunity knocking in coal stocks? Asking for a planet.

The EPA is a tick on an elephant’s butt saying “Look at the huge pile of poop I made.”

Rewarding and giving Republican’s biggest donors what they paid for is all that matters to these bastards now. It’s the spoils system of giving patronage to the highest bidder. This is what the government under tRump has become.

Yeah well I think they found out a lot of us give a hoot, don’t wanta’ pollute!

Well, parents of kids with asthma - as well as anyone who gives a shit about their own health - should be jumping up and down with joy (although too much jumping in the coal smog will make you lose your breath a lot faster).
