Discussion: Elizabeth Warren Delivers Scathing Speech On Trickle Down Economics

Discussion for article #231721

Good stuff, and I hope this leads to a more concerted effort among Democrats and liberals to articulate their proposals and vision for policy that promotes widespread prosperity.

Scathing? Yawn…

Speeches will NOT fix the problem, people.

When the problem is a demotivated electorate, speeches - and a charismatic speaker- are the only thing that will save America.

I hope that Warren develops some nuance in criticizing deregulation. Many small business owners moan about government regulation and its cost. We need these folks on our side.

In this case she specifically mentions big banks and giant corporations, which is good, but there has to be some acknowledgment that costs of compliance that are near negligible to larger players can keep smaller players from entering markets at all.

I’m going to guess his answer is “Moar Trolling!”

I’d bet good money that Daniel was the closest thing there was to an MSM reporter at this event.

She’s talking about regulations on banks and wall street brokers, which doesn’t hurt small companies one bit. So spare us your blanket statement on regulations hurting small businesses, turd.

My guess was “more yawning”.

Pound the podium!

And the ones small businesses moan most about are the very ones that are most important: workplace safety regulations, wage and hour regulations, product safety regulations, and environmental regulations.

Though, if you press them, the ones that are actually most vexatious to them are the local regulations–business licensure and permitting, building and fire safety regulations, and zoning being at the top of the bitching queue.

“Small Business” is like the middle class and working poor in this country. Big business and the wealthy don’t give a shit about the small businesses.

Big business and the wealthy have, since the 80s, bought and paid for their lobbyists and politicians, with the goal of stealing money away from small business, the working poor, and the middle class. For example: WalMart has killed thousands of small businesses. WalMart’s pay is so low that they promote Medicaid and food stamps as a Job Benefit…Of course, we all pay for that while the wealthy and big business offshore their profits…avoiding taxes…

You don’t know much about Elizabeth Warren. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency was her idea. It wouldn’t exist without her. She gets things done - it is going to be difficult being in the minority party, but there is great value in the way she frames the argument about national economics. People need to hear this and, if they do, it may go a long way to changing the debate in this country about economic fairness. In effect, during the 1980s and on, the Republicans (and, as Warren points out, joined by many Democrats) were really making a case that laws regarding businesses, finance, labor, etc., were unfair to corporations, to the rentier class. She is exactly right in her analysis. Trickle-down was an ad hoc argument meant to justify changing laws to favor business, finance and employers and to disfavor labor.

You live a world where everyone is responsible and morally pure and compassionate and totally honest? What planet is that? Small businesses need to be regulated to keep them honest not to stifle their efforts to be successful. Big businesses need to be watched and not allowed to buy our democracy one politician at a time.

I’m sure you are in large part right, but there are cases where the regulations meant to keep big players in line, because they are apt to do something awful, keep small players out of the market.

A case in point is slaughterhouses. You would not want to loosen regulations on giant slaughterhouses, unless you like food-borne illness and animal cruelty, but those same regulations make it near impossible for small producers to find someone to slaughter their animals.

Happy New Year Randy and to all here at TPM. I had some signing in issues with TPM but they seem to be resolved. And to President Warren, I say Kick Some Ass!! If Hillary really wants the job, then I believe her next position should be Single Payer Health Care. That might bring the base around to her - if not, then bring on Elizabeth
