There are all kinds of migrants from Canada, every year. You should see the caravan of motor homes and fifth wheelers with Alberta and British Columbia tags headed into podunk towns like Quartzite, AZ every winter. And back north at the end of March.
Nobody kicks in their tail lights, or asks for their papers, or nuthin.

Both for immigration and asylum, people must enter at a designated port of entry in order to be considered legal entry. Now, the issue is Steve’s point below re: our border guards and that the cartels operate the border on the other side and will dictate where people cross, legal or illegal doesn’t matter to them.
Julia Aynsley (sp?) at NBC does good reporting on this topic as does NPR if you want to research immigration topics.

I disagree, it just means that they have many more fine white folks to foster these children than they originally planned. These fine white folks after all need those fosters (servants) and should not be denied the chance to obtain one.

It’s less of a “crime” than a fucking parking ticket. As Charlie Pierce wrote, thousands of children are behind bars for the crime of crossing a line on a map.

You are right with the above correction. Crossing the border other than at a port of entry is a federal misdemeanor, punishable by a fine and possible imprisonment of up to six months, but before Sessions’ “zero tolerance” policy foreigners were invariably put into civil “removal proceedings” where their asylum claims could be litigated in immigration court. They were also almost always released on bond (in certain fact settings) or “paroled in” in others.
Conviction of the above misdemeanor will not bar a grant of asylum. So, yeah, the entire Trump/Sessions policy is pure racist bullshit for the “base.” Separating families is a major human rights abuse into the bargain. This year we join the ranks of human rights abusers our State Dept. annually lists in their “Human Rights Reports,” which ironically includes a section on other countries’ treatment of asylum claimants. Just don’t expect the State Dept. to write a report on US.
