Discussion for article #237364
Does the sound of her voice drive anyone else bonkers? God, I cringe every time I hear her.
I agree…after issuing the statement yesterday it was time to just put an end to it and let it go.
NO DON’T ANYONE START SINGING!
It bothers me too, but in fact it is a serious medical condition that she has periodic treatments for.
“I read it in a Facebook comment” is the new “I read it in Wikipedia”.
I wonder what else she believes because she read it in a Facebook comment.
BTW, her voice is messed up because of some vocal cord malady she had in the past.
This incident points to the larger problem of the massive incompetence of what passes today for journalism. Far too often questions that should be asked are not for fear that the reporter will not be given further access to the interviewee. On the other hand questions that are asked often are framed to make the reporter look good rather than to gain insights and understanding.
This reporter was so eager to make herself look like she possessed heretofore secret information that she didn’t even ask a question. She simply demonstrated her incomptance. She, along with many of her colleagues should be removed from further duties.
Must be a slow news day if this is the headline story.
The fact that a “journalist” would take an assertion from Facebook, and state it as fact, shows the shallow depth of information this NPR talking head is willing to wade through to fish for fact.
She did it because she could not resist it. I read about this yesterday before a friend of mine ( a Jew ) and I were to go to a wine tasting. He said “I didn’t know he was Jewish”…as most folks didn’t.
They do now.
“”“Bloomberg thought it was unlikely he could win as an independent. A short, Jewish guy who’s for gay marriage and against gun rights isn’t going to make it, he told various friends around town”""
“”"“And then there was Secretary of State James Baker’s infamous “fuck the Jews” remark. … uttered the vulgarity, noting that Jews “didn’t vote for us anyway.””""
She had to do it. She had to get it in there. Maybe this will buy a little slack from the GOP’ers that want to cut NPR funding. Who knows but she just had to do it. She isn’t going to query someones Southern Baptism or their dual citizenship with Canada…but Jew…she just had to go there.
I think that’s kind of harsh. She’s not a reporter, she’s an interviewer who made a big mistake and acknowledged it. Typically, her program is among the most balanced and informative one on radio. I’m cutting her some slack on this one.
Indeed. It’s like journalists nowadays troll the internet and Facebook for information. I suppose it’s faster and cheaper (for the company they are employed with) but damn it just comes across as incredibly lazy. Rehm should be embarrased but I suspect she will keep doing what she’s doing because it’s easier to go with “I heard from a friend who said a friend of theirs said…” rather than actually investigating issues.
I have to agree with you. I admire Rehm but she was raised in a “Christian Arab” household and I sometimes hear a tinge of anti-Semitism in her approach to certain guests. Maybe I am more sensitive because I am Jewish. But I remember as a kid people taunting me to go live in Israel, since I was a citizen there. It was meant as an insult. She blew the dog whistle and maybe, if I give her the benefit of the doubt, didn’t even realize she was doing it.
Have listened to Rehm for years. She made a mistake and she issued the right kind of apology. The one that says “I was wrong” instead of “so sorry YOU got offended”. That is a sincere apology.
Cut her some slack on this one because she’s generally very good to excellent.
And to my Jewish friends, please acknowledge the damage that the current Israeli PM has done with his very public coziness with our GOP. Although the question was not approached in the most finessed manner (as Rehm has acknowledged and apologized for), don’t dismiss the question. It exists because the the very public coziness that has made the question relevant to a lot of us on the left. The reason for this question did not start with Rehm or with me–it started with the antics of the Israeli PM.
At least she didn’t use that cop out style of saying IF he was offended I apologize.
What happened to the claim that she had a document from NPR with this “fact?”
As one of your “Jewish friends” I detest Bibi. American Jews are not a homogenous group in lockstep with Zionism. I find your comment offensive.
Which part?
T:" I suppose it’s faster and cheaper" " " rather than actually investigating issues." Yep ! LOL!!
Eh, people always want things both ways. Similarly, anything anti-Zionist is automatically turned into “anti-Semetic”.
