Discussion: Diane Rehm Explains Why She Asked Bernie Sanders Bizarre Israel Question

Especially since Sanders could care less.

Of course she had to ask it because everyone knows those sneaky Democrats will try anything to get the Presidency, like having a Kenyan sneak in, Now the GOP on the other hand can have a true blue Canadian born American but that’s ok (snark).

Time for Ms. Rehm to retire. What she did was unprofessional, clueless, and unforgivably reckless.

Because the two go hand in hand.
Saying you’re anti-Zionist but not anti-semitic is usually no different from saying that you’re not a racist but those people are lazy and shiftless.

It’s the Duning-Kruger effect applied to something other than stupidity.
Racists and anti-semites never seem to know that they’re racists and anti-semites.

Absolutely. Plus, these conspiracy theories (the GOP is trying to destroy Sanders, HRC did it!) aren’t rooted in anything remotely resembling reality. It’s truly tri-cornered, tinfoil hat thinking. It seems she took a Facebook question and presented it as fact, probably to make herself look as though she really studied up on the Senator before the interview. She was probably inquiring about his supposed dual citizenship as sort of a fun fact. I don’t believe she meant Sanders any harm at all.

Diane Rehm is 78, and she’s no longer at the top of her game.

Time to quietly retire.

Thanks for proving my point!

I didn’t prove your point.
But you seem to have proved mine.

Exactly correct. Talking about running a non-story into the ground!!!

How old are you? As awful as he is, the problem didn’t start with Netanyahu. The far left turned on Israel after the '67 war.

Perhaps I hallucinated it, but does anyone remember when Diane Rehm interviewed Fred Rogers?

Sort of like listening to a tennis match in slow motion.

On quaaludes.

Sadly, it made more sense (to me at least) than her diverting even one second of valuable airtime from issues that bore the Villagers, but nevertheless plague tens of millions of ordinary Americans every single day of their lives: the redistribution of wealth upward; working full time at multiple jobs for a sub-livable wage; a political system that certainly appears to work for the highest bidder; etc.

If she’s normally balanced and informative, this is a huge aberration. I wonder why? The very kindest terms I can come up with are lazy and slipshod, and even those are giving her the benefit of the doubt.

If I’m not mistaken, one of the Kennedy men, who served in congress, not sure but I think Bobby Jr, has the same condition??

Relax, she screwed up, she apologized, time to move on…

I wrote about experiencing this phenomenon in yesterdays thread – the still potent idea that jews bear collective responsibility. Whether its Jesus, 9/11, the Iraq War, the banking crisis, or the policies of the current Israeli Prime Minister – the accusations come from both the right and left. That some evangelicals see Israel as the key to the second coming does not in my opinion make them true supporters of the Israeli people. Its a political affiliation that has grown only out what they see as a lack of better options. I think its ultimately self-destructive, but an understandable reaction.

First time commenter here but many could argue that Zionism itself could be considered racist.

It is very surprising that Rehm would ask this US-Israeli dual citizenship question of Bernie Sanders. It is highly incendiary and it basically says a lot that she would knowingly ask such a question from a bogus list, and that she wouldn’t even vet the question with accurate research. So, why would she do that?

And then when it blew up in her face, she claims credit for ā€œputting a rumor to rest?ā€ And then she wanted to know if others in Congress were?

Was she trying get out to the public that he’s Jewish? If so, why?

Thing is, which she doesn’t really acknowledge, is that asking a question like that, based on nothing substantial, is really awfully unprofessional. If this is totally anomalous (I am not a regular listener), well, she should own up more honestly that it was a pretty significant failure of professional standards. But if it was in any way typical of her, it raises the question of whether she is qualified to be an on air ā€œjournalist.ā€

How old are you? I was an adult in 1967 and have admired Israel ever since…until the PM of Israel stepped right into US politics with his address to Congress. It overstepped the boundaries. Just as I’ve had to own Bush II’s actions as head of the US government, Israel has to own Bibi’s actions as head of the Israeli government.

If you want to stop all political discussion when it comes to Israel, you can certainly try. You can make a left of center moderate into a rabid far lefty if you want. But I simply am not that.

That’s absurd. As an American, I certainly bore responsibility for Bush II’s actions. That seems to be the same sort of collective responsibility you are talking about…borne as an American. This is not unique to the Jewish people.
