Discussion: DeVos: School Choice Opponents Are Akin To 'Flat-Earthers'

Oh Jesus…who fed you THAT line Betsy? No, opponents are not ‘flat-earthers’. In fact, that’s what people like YOU that haven’t even SEEN a public school in years might be labeled. The REST of us are trying to education, GOOD education, to the maximum number of children in the US. We are trying to stop the diverting of school funds to schools who LACK accreditation and whose only charter seems to be the grifting of the treasury. I won’t even say it’s a ‘nice’ try, Bets. It’s stupid and demeaning and shows your disdain for the American people. This ‘let them eat cake’ mentality is getting a little old.

“education should not be a partisan issue.”

Everyone should be able to buy any party they like.

But still number 1 in the annals of GOP Mischaracterization and Generally Saying Stupid Shit about Science and History:

DeVos: School Choice Opponents Are Akin To ‘Flat-Earthers’

That projection there, Betsy, is something else.

Hey DeVos, I dare you to ask Ben Carson if the world is flat.

DeVos is the flat earther: school choice has been a disaster in Michigan and she knows it. She used her wealth to pressure the Repiblican legislators allow the charter schools to escape accountability. She is toying with the notion that as long as the parents are happy it doesn’t matter if their children learn anything.

“DeVos’ address was thin on details.”

Of course it was. She already proved her incompetency at her confirmation hearing. All she’s doing now is underscoring that point.

“If you hear nothing else I say tonight, please hear this,” DeVos said early in the speech, “education should not be a partisan issue.”

We get it. Education is a for-profit industry issue, for you and your pals.

Bite me.

She just wants kids to be turned into mindless drones who will do whatever their Wall Street masters tell them to do!

Believing that the earth was flat was not true, was not a fact. It was a belief held by ignorant people who simply could not comprehend that the scope of our planet went beyond their plot of land.

Pushing charter schools that have no accountability, are promoted by hedge funds to capture public funds and largely promote segregation under the false idea of “choice” is the 21st C flat earth ideology.

And while we’re on the subject of stupid, I came upon this little gem,

In 1976, a professor of economic history at the University of California, Berkeley published an essay outlining the fundamental laws of a force he perceived as humanity’s greatest existential threat: Stupidity.
Stupid people, Carlo M. Cipolla explained, share several identifying traits: they are abundant, they are irrational, and they cause problems for others without apparent benefit to themselves, thereby lowering society’s total well-being. There are no defenses against stupidity, argued the Italian-born professor, who died in 2000. The only way a society can avoid being crushed by the burden of its idiots is if the non-stupid work even harder to offset the losses of their stupid brethren.

We all act stupidly from time to time, but there are many among us who are consistently, truly stupid.

Check out the reference for the “five laws of stupidity”. I can’t vouch for the academic value of this treatise, but it is quite droll.
E.g., Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

"Education should not be a partisan issue.”

Says the fraud attempting to kill public service loan forgiveness, a program meant to encourage educated workers to build careers at nonprofits, where by definition they’re paid less money.

Not to mention the PSLF program had bipartisan support in 2007 and was signed into the law by GW Bush.

Yeah, THAT program. THAT is what DeVos wants to kill entirely, for no good reason. Asshole.

So let me get this straight- an unqualified millionaire dilettante, whose brother is literally a merchant of death, deigns to lecture educated Americans on what constitutes regressive thinking.

Spare me, Ms. Antoinette.

DeVos is the poster child of the need for higher education. Lame!

Everyone in this country has access to school choice. Just as he or she has access to health care.

Education is going to continue to be a political problem as long as we use property taxes to fund education. Every child should have the same amount of taxpayer money available for his or her education. Of course, the freedom of religion issues overlay everything, but all kids deserve a great education regardless where they live.
