Discussion for article #236937
While Hastert was Speaker at that time, the real problem was the Chair of the Page Board, John Shimkus (R-IL-12). Shimkus knew about the inappropriate contacts for at least 4 years. He concealed them from other members of the Page Board, and possibly from the leadership as well. He has never been held to account for his culpability in this matter, which is central. He continues to be a member of the House inner circle, despite his reprehensible conduct as accessory after the fact for molestation and possibly rape.
Look folks nothing new here just one family values GOP pervert covering for another family vales GOP pervert
Huh. Sexually repressed white males covering up for each other in the name of “Family Values”. Which family I wonder? The Corleones?, THe Duggars?, The Sopranos?
As we see time and again in cases like this (look at Bill Cosby), when one incident is finally exposed, we always learn there were many more.
This is probably just the tip of the iceberg for everything that’s been going on with the Republicans. Hastert, then his supposed replacement was found to be screwing other women and interns while he was married, and Foley, and Gingrich (3 marital affairs).
What next? Will Fox News make Hastert part of their gang!..they welcomed Newt Gignrich and of course fromer GE CEO Jack Welch (another one who forced himself on subordinates).
They went after Clinton…and it turns out that Clinton’s affaird with Monica was consensual and she was an ADULT!
Hastert raped under aged students in his high school! He needs to go to jail! Heck, Newt Gingrich should be in jail!
“…Hastert did know about explicit email messages Foley sent…”
Yet Hastert accused everyone else of lying, in a display of true conservative values.
The corporate media and the nation’s corps of political and investigative reporters failed the American people during President Clinton’s impeachment charade and the Iraq War.
it makes one wonder how many more hidden family values guys there are in the gop? If rape is normal for the gop well what’s the problem? I can only guess there will be more revelations of all these good chrisitan soldiers marching as to war…
The Corporate Controlled Conservative Press has been failing the American people ever since they brought Reagan to power.
That’s a rather wide brush, but we should keep in mind that a statement like that is easily made against the GOP’s conservatives, because it is the conservatives that espouse Christian values. The Dems? Not so much, which is why such behavior is accepted for them.
Not so sure his past incident (or perhaps incidents is possible) was relevant here. If Foley was a Democrat, Hastert would have had the opposite reaction and immediately become “aware” of the situation, making sure it came out right away.
Men in general are just so driven by the little head rather than the big head. And unfortunately for guys that have homosexual drives but don’t want it known and down feel free to pursue it openly with above age guys, they seem to be more tempted to pursue it behind the scenes with underage guys. It probably happens a lot less than heterosexual guys pursuing underage girls but it gets more publicity due to the less accepted nature of it. Not trying to condone any of it, just seems like something that would happen a lot less either way if we were a more open sexual society.
I can’t stand Gingrich, but why should he be in jail? For extra-marital affairs? By that logic, Bill Clinton and a lot of Dems should be in jail. No way people should be jailed for that.
No, Hastert will not be part of the FOX crew. He molested at least one kid. I’m not aware of anyone at FOX who has done that. That’s pretty serious stuff. Ollie North was convicted of crimes, but he is viewed as being persecuted, etc. A child molester will not be treated as such, even by FOX.
Congress should not be a self-governing body.
In the future, if it appears a member or staffer has possibly broken the law, call law enforcement and let them investigate. It’s too easy for internal investigations to facilitate coverups.
So, you are cool with, in the run-up to an election, that the party in the Executive Branch should use the power of legal enforcement to investigate, pre-emptively detain, and otherwise have legal discussions with legislators in the other party?
"It’s time to repress another memory." - Dennis Hastert
I understand the comments section was worked on last night. That must be true, they are all screwed up today.
There is nobody in this mess for whom I have any sympathy. Hastert is at the same time the villain and the victim. Hastert’s role in the Foley affair is fully explained by plain old political corruption, there is no need to tie it to Hastert’s personal hypocrisy, nor is their any evidence connecting the two.
Are you cool with Congress covering up wrongdoing of its members? Or conducting multiple investigations into Benghazi?
There’s no question the polarization in DC has led to obstruction and abuses. If you have a different solution, I’d love to hear it.
Foley didn’t dupe anyone and Hastert knew about that mess and its details from the get go. Lets stop with the ridiculous denials. But there was a good chance if he took measures against Foley the boy from his past might jump out and call foul. That’s it…we know that.
I’d swear that the IT staff at TPM are all GOP state legislators moonlighting here.
All they do is create solutions to problems that don’t really exist.
And I want my AV back!
TPM has replaced it with an uppercase T.
