One might think that as a minority party in the House for 8 years, the Democrats might have been preparing for the day that they became majority party. Maybe even had some draft legislation ready to go on day one…
But that would have required working.

Draft legislation that would be voted down by the Republican Senate, or vetoed by the Republican President?
As Chairman of the Committee, he can hold public hearings on the importance of transparency. He can have published reports. All that gets attention that the Ranking Member of the Committee can’t get. Go on a few Sunday shows to make your point, and THEN do what you always had the power to do - without any legislation: get the returns. Take your time, do it right, show anyone with a brain why it is important for the country, not just a partisan play.

Well, House Republicans voted to repeal and replace Obamacare more than 30 times while Obama was President.
The point is that the House Democrats should be pushing and passing a progressive legislative agenda, and making the Republicans vote against it. Then they have something to campaign on.
It isn’t enough just to get power - you have to use the power once you get it.

This, if you find a dead body in the park you don’t spend time building a case for why you should investigate the body, you just investigate the body because that’s what you do when you find a body in the park even if that investigation is just an autopsy to find that, yep, it was a heart attack. Expecting financial transparency with regards for possible conflicts of interest from the president should be that same level of “this is how things are done.”

Yes, but do not mistake even temper for lack of resolve. Western Massachusetts has a long tradition of anti-establishment populism going back to Shay’s Rebellion.

Not for a nano second would I conflate being even tempered with lack of resolve. This is all I know of Mr. Neal so far and I’m impressed more than words can say.

The powerful Ways and Means Committee writes tax law, signs off on trade deals, and oversees Social Security and Medicare. Mr. Neal, an institutionally minded western Massachusetts Democrat, wants to make serious policy pushes in almost all of those areas.
First Mr. Neal, 69, would lead the committee’s consideration of the revised North American Free Trade Agreement. Mr. Neal voted against the original Nafta agreement, and his opposition to the deal could hobble efforts to sign it into law quickly. Mr. Neal was a vocal opponent of Republicans’ latest tax cuts and would convene hearings on the law’s effects. He and committee Democrats also would play a key role in the party’s attempts to stabilize the Affordable Care Act, address high prescription drug costs, negotiate a potential infrastructure investment bill with Mr. Trump and pass legislation requiring all but the smallest employers to provide 401(k) retirement plans.
Mr. Neal also would have at his disposal an obscure provision in the federal tax code that allows the leaders of Congress’s tax-writing committees to request and investigate the tax returns of any American, including the president.
