Yes, one vote in this race, but added to the dismantling of the Republican 66-34 majority in the House along with it, Republicans just got the Red asses whooped! They’ll all go russian back to daddy Vlad to ask for more mula to make themselves feel better about themselves.
I must say that I’ve been a bit surprised at how quickly VA has been turning bluer and bluer – but we could not have done so without the diversity of the Washington, D.C. suburbs as well as Charlottesville, Norfolk, Richmond (which has always been blue) and even Roanoke. Those numbers add up. Lord, I’d love to see a few Republicans switch to Democrat or Independent and caucus with us.
I think the difference between Kentucky and Virginia is the strength of the Washington, D.C. metro and growing suburbs. That diversity has been such a positive for us, as well as all those federal and federal-related jobs. Kentucky doesn’t have that, that I’m aware of. Where you are, in the Louisville area, it’s a lot more diverse than the rest of the state, right? That, plus Southern Baptists and other strong patriarchal religious sects. God (no pun intended), I thought we’d never get loose from Pat Robertson’s and Jerry Falwell’s idiocy grip. Death to the older religious crowds in VA has helped us quite a bit.
Not to mention the bucks they’ll get in tax savings from the tax scam.
Speaking of Ol’ Landslide, Robert Caro really dissected that Senate race in his second LBJ book–Compelling stuff.
Time for Medicaid expansion! Find one Republican, butter him up, and jam that puppy through.
Actually, Obama both cast and counted the deciding vote!
Bet Yancey’s wife is secretly embarrassed about actually voting for Ms. Simonds.
And get out there and register some voters, esp. in VA as felons are now being re-enfranchised.
And there are still a couple of recounts pending in the same VA House of Delegates, no? So this could continue to change?
Now THAT is a close election!
This was the closest of the lot but hope springs eternal and all that.
One of those was already held and stayed with the republicans…District 40. The other is up for recount in January (later because of some lawsuits about irregularities in voting), but the republicans hold a 82 vote lead there…so its pretty unlikely we will overcome that in a recount. Her picking up 11 votes is the second biggest vote gain in recount history in VA.
So, chances are…it stays 50/50.
I am feeling a little frisky myself.
and @rollinnolan
Thanks. Still awesome when you think back to a week before this election, what reasonable expectations would have been for Democrat pickups.
Yes, by far. Actually, I’d argue that the vast majority of KY’s minority population lives in Louisville, Frankfort, and Lexington. Heading up I-64, Louisville is about 45 minutes west of Frankfort, and Frankfort is just 20-30 minutes west of Lexington. So, basically, our minority population is squeezed into about a two hour radius. There are other cities and towns with decent minority populations, but they have much smaller populations overall.
What’s happening in KY, which has only had 2 Republican governors since the 60’s and where Democrats controlled the House for 100 years, is what’s happening elsewhere. Fear of a black president, gay people, and equality in general are sending angry white people to the polls to vote against their economic best interest.
Northam should do what my asshole governor did. He found Democrats in what would be friendly GOP districts and appointed them to other offices.
Thank God for some good news today! I needed it.
[The House revoting the tax cuts doesn’t count … House Republicans get off on voting evil again and again and again (i.e. Obamacare repeal) even when it’s a completely empty gesture. And, sadly, this time it’s not…}
This makes me hang my head. For a number of years now–and this should have been a clue to me–I’ve heard angry whites wanting to move out of state (Tennessee is a popular destination) because of “foreigners and out-of-staters who are making it bad for everyone else.” Even in my own family, I’m a bit of a black sheep on politics and being attracted to diversity. As with anything, there’s a lot of gray in there, but the sum is almost always the same.
As a Virginian and Democratic Party volunteer, I have to say yippee!!!
