Discussion: Cruz Responds To Report That He'd Have No Problem If Daughter Were Gay

Discussion for article #235632

I wonder how many times, when speaking before a conservative, Evangelical, teahading type of gathering he has volunteered that he would love his daughter just as much if she were gay? My guess is an integer less than 1.

Itā€™s big-tent when you risk alienating your audience by delivering a message that embraces an inclusiveness they may not currently support.

Itā€™s pure, retrograde pandering when you tailor your message to your audience, and thereby reinforce their prejudices.

Cruz is no big-tent Republican. Heā€™s not even a big-tent bigot. Heā€™s more of a pup-tent bigot, or maybe even a sleeping-rough Christianist bigot.

Heā€™s simply attacking The Times for questioning his supposed ā€œopen mindedness.ā€ He makes no effort to shine a light on the glaring disconnect between his obviously conflicting statements.

The HRC could do to his statement with their red pen what they did with Jindalā€™s feeble attempts at defending his hopelessly outdated views, except thereā€™d be 3 times the ink used in 1/10 the space.

Heā€™s a craven manipulative ass whoā€™d do or say anything for a vote.

Iā€™m so damned sick and tired of Republicans and religious right types who say theyā€™d love their kids, no matter what ā€“ right after saying everybody elseā€™s gay and lesbian kids should be second-class citizens with no rights here on earch, and thereafter will burn in hell for all eternity.

Big Tentā€¦come on inā€¦you donā€™t get your full civil rights, but you are ok with that, right? As long we keep your taxes low.

They accept their own gay children while vilifying all others, they look the other way when ā€˜their womenā€™ have abortions, actually encouraging them at times and they hand out corporate welfare by the billions while cutting aid to the ā€˜sad sacksā€™. Theyā€™re simply vile people.

It seems we are mixing two issues. Of course he loves his children and would continue to, in his mind, love his children if they were gay just as he would continue to love his children if they ended up being murderers.

The second issue is does he feel his child should have all of the rights and privileges of being a citizen of the United States if the child is gay. Somehow guys like Cruz thinks it is a badge of honor to get in front of a group of gays and say I like / love you but do not think you qualify for all of the rights and privileges of a US citizen

It comes from their view of the world. They have the right to be better off than anyone else. Rich individuals often got away in the past with being gay and not having to marry (being bachelors or spinsters), but many middle class and lower class lesbians and gays were forced into ā€œwhite marriagesā€ in order to survive. Itā€™s all about wealth privilege.

Nice man. He would want his hypothetically gay children to have fewer rights than his straight children. Even Dick Cheney is more progressive on this issue.

Well, heā€™s wealthy and rich. That means his daughter can be lesbian without having to get married to anyone and still have many of the same rights as a straight person thanks to having lawyers who can put together all the documents getting her those rights.

Basically, on the surface he appears hypocritical, underneath, he thinks heā€™s being completely accurate.

Crux is playing another round of Hocus Pocus for the rubes: If he proposes a Constitutional Amendment screwing gays which has no chance of passage, his voters will think he is accomplishing something.

Cruz has a big fat zero for accomplishments.

Cruz also introduced legislation this week

Since heā€™s never, according to most reporting, in the Chamber, does an unmarked car drive up Capitol Hill and toss ā€˜legislationā€™ onto the Senate steps?
Also, does Ted hand wash or machine wash the gay money?

I donā€™t know; for someone who only wanted to study with college students that were from Harvard or Princeton, I find it hard to believe Cruz is as inclusive and big tent as he claims in the statement. And before you say ā€œwell that was when he was in collegeā€, I will agree - people do change. However based on the stories Iā€™ve read about him, he still comes off the same person, same ideas, same attitude he had then that he does now. I just donā€™t get a ā€œman of the peopleā€ vibe from him. Heā€™s very authoritarian, has a ā€œmy way or the highwayā€, stuck up persona and doesnā€™t seem to work well with people that donā€™t share his exact same views. People in his own party seem to have an extraordinary distaste for him and his actions.
And sorry - I also donā€™t buy his claim that heā€™d love his daughter if she were gay. He may - I obviously canā€™t tell the future - but this is one of those things that you have to experience if it happens rather than saying definitively now while they are young and you have some control over them. And again, based on his personality, I truly doubt he would. I would be happy to be wrong on this, though.

The original report almost made him seem okay. Then he had to go and release this statement. He sounds like even more of an asshole to me.

Hereā€™s what Cruz is up to.

To me the issue of does or doesnā€™t he love his daughters if they are gay is irrelevant. This is inserted into the discussion by guys like Cruz as a red herring so the real issue of full rights of a citizen of the USA is not discussed. You can love a child and still think ( or know) they are ā€œchallengedā€ and should not have full rights - for example, restricted driving rights of a child that is blind. Unfortunately it would seem Cruz looks at homosexuality in the same light, thinking the child is ā€œflawedā€ and should be protected from themselves.

So, he would still love his children, but would still deny them the right to marry their loved one because of the bible. The truth is if he loved them he would fight for them to be able to marry their loved one. That is what love is no matter what some book says.

Oh wellā€¦everything is all better then.

Time to vomit.

Again, the real question is whether Cruzā€™s gay daughter could still manage to love Cruz as he fights tooth and nail for votes by defending discrimination against her. Dude is so full of shit that I canā€™t imagine he doesnā€™t carry a Pigpen-esque miasma of cesspool scent around with him wherever he goes.

Yes heā€™s just ā€œmeetingā€ with them. Total coincidence if they happen to write him checks.
