Am I the only one wondering how in the hell this guy can be a Senator from Texas? GWB, and even Gov. Goodhair, felt it politically vital to take a softer stance on immigration issues than the hard maximalist right of their party. Has the population of Latino voters in Texas shrunk in the last four years without me hearing about it?

Ted was born in Calgary, Canada but yes he technically is an American citizen by naturalization. Which should mean, assuming our laws are followed, that he cannot be President as he isn’t a “natural born” citizen.

No, Cruz is a “natural born” citizen because his mother is an American citizen. It doesn’t matter where he was born so long as his mother is a citizen and meets the then current statutory eligibility criteria.

Orwell would be proud of the phrase “Obama will threaten a shutdown” seeing as how Congress is who authorizes appropriations bills which must then be signed by the president (it explains this in this obscure document called the Constitution, which Republicans claim to have read but seem to have little functional knowledge thereof). Unless he actually believes his own bullshit, and that Obama thinks he has that authority because he is lawless, which is unlikely.

Because his primary supporters that got him the GOP nomination were white Tea Partiers who are immigration hardliners. Once you get the Republican nomination,you’re the general election winner. All it takes is an ®. That’s how. He and Romney both got 57% of the vote in TX in 2012. Lotta straight party ticket votes I’d say.
