Discussion: Cosmic Irony: States That Didn't Expand Medicaid Paying More For The Program

Discussion for article #241919

I don’t agree with characterizing as “ironic” what’s likely caused by deliberate state-enabled fraud & state-tolerated inhumane oppression of the disabled & ill by medical caregivers & the for-profit clinics & hospitals from which they provide their care & pull their heists.

Talk about own-petard hoisting. Here are the non-expansion states (Pennsylvania has since changed its tune).

Apparently cutting off your nose to spite your face does incur additional medicare costs. Who knew?

It only seems ironic to Democrats, who actually want the government to help the most people as cost effectively as possible. What do Medicaid non-expanding Republicans want?

  • Less power to the Federal government? Check.
  • More power to the states? Check.
  • Less money to help poor folk? Check.
  • More money to help cronies? Check.

None of those consequences are unintended.

this is a case of where the gop has been bragging about ruling over a majority of State Houses, Kansas, Texas, Louisiana etc. and these governors have proven time and time again that republican policies HURT the states, and the rest of the country as well…These Governors have proven themselves to be incapable of governing in a sane manner…Brownback? anyone? these governors have chosen to walk the path of austerity, instead of walking the path to sanity…

The larger costs of opting out — not captured in the study — are the expenses that hospitals and the healthcare system incur by having to cover indigent patients and by substituting clinical care with emergency rooms.

Throwing away public money to score political points off their own constituents’ ignorance irks sane people in red states to no end. In Georgia, our “fiscally conservative” governor and legislature are costing me money while deriding Democrats as irresponsible big spenders.

“Fiscal Responsibility”…Republican style!

Hey Repukes, you should check to see if getting your asses kicked is covered under Obamacare. You’re going to need it.

It’s a fact that medical bills can push an uninsured family into bankruptcy and, potentially, Medicaid eligibility. Whether that’s a significant part of what’s driving this is just an hypothesis, however.

Yes, it’s tragic. It’s also called political opposition to President Obama.

Nothing but more insanity and hate from GOP governors.

“Everybody loves expanding Medicaid until they have to pay for it,”

I have never understood why Republicans believe that all government services should be free.

Well, obviously this is Obama’s fault.

And it’s such flawed logic, because you have to consider the alternative. It’s not like you have a choice when it comes to healthcare, and we don’t exist in a vacuum. You’re paying for it one way or another. I’d rather a few extra tax dollars fund it than pay skyrocketing medical costs because large portions of the population can’t afford basic care and end up in the ER.

No, no. It was something Ronald Reagan did, and it’s just now taking effect.

Is that covered by ACA? Sounds like elective surgery to me.
