Discussion: Corbett Won't Appeal Court Decision Striking Down Penn. Voter ID Law

Discussion for article #222570

This the first time Corbett has made the right decision.

It’s clear that he knows he’s not likely to be re-elected regardless of whether the law is in effect or not, and that may have had an effect on his decision.

Corbett is one of the least popular governors in the US—and for good reason. He’s done an execrable job, and has damaged Pennsylvania in many ways.

Someonde is trying to save his job. Too little too late.

Corbett has finally realized that when you’re already in a hole, you should stop digging. Mind you, he’s about five feet deep at this point…

Just speculating but I’ve seen evidence here in PA that women, seniors and minorities were mobilizing against this with voter education efforts and drives to get everyone ID. People don’t like blatant efforts to disenfranchise them and this could well have backfired here. I don’t know if that was a factor but I did see the effort to fight it starting.

Name me a Republican elected governor in 2010 that you couldn’t say that about–Brownback, McCrory, Kasich, Snyder, Lex Luthor down in Florida. They’ve all made themselves about as welcome as a dose of the clap.

I have lost count of how many of these states voter ID laws have been declared unconstitutional. They just won’t give up.

Baggers denounce Corbett as a “RINO” in 5, 4, 3, …

Amazing how a 29 percent approval rating turns a man into a goddamned liberal. This man can only aspire to be a joke.

And all this time I thought he was Pinhead from Hellraiser. Then again, I never saw the movie…

I like it! Shall we start using that instead of Bullethead?

Naked attempt to get re-elected.

“…to reassure the public that everyone who votes is registered…”

This doesn’t make any sense.

With conservatives squeezing the borders shut, only Americans will be here. Isn’t “registration” simply big government trying to restrict people from their Constitutional right to freedom? Shouldn’t conservatives favor LESS bureaucracy, instead of more?

Tom Corbett has done enough and pissed off enough constituencies that the hole he dug himself is so HUGE he will never find a ladder big enough to help him get out. The list is almost endless. A who’s who of those to whom he owes his political life would fill an encyclopedia. When the first round of lawsuits was initiated he couldn’t even cite parts of the legislation when questioned about them. You want this so badly but you can’t even clearly state any parts of it, just espouse the party line. The burdens were so draconian they didn’t make sense. He won’t be in office to sign another POS legislation to replace this immensely flawed one. PA is going to have a new governor.

Well, he still has a friend in Jerry Sandusky who he failed to prosecute when he was DA…

Totally not one of mine. It’s the usual term for him at Balloon-Juice, one of whose front pagers (one of my favorite writers anywhere) is a Floridian.

Oh, but their position is much more nuanced than that: freedom for me, not for thee.

I wonder if this means the kiddie rape enabler is giving up?

Voldemort.

Corbett knows he’s unpopular in the state and has to back off in order to appease those in the center. This is no “grand gesture” , it’s the governor trying to cover his ass.
