Funny how Conservative icon Ronald Reagan secretly traded arms (including TOW missiles) to the Iranian Guards, in return for hostages, and yet we didn’t see the Republicans wailing for impeachment! That was a much more serious story than this one.
(If your memory is short, go look at the Iran-Contra affair)
What sanctimonious, bloviating idiots these Republicans are.
The president needs to do a press conference in the Rose Garden, surrounded by military men and women in which he gets mad as hell defending his decision. He needs to say that we don’t know the circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture but we’ve already launched an investigation and we’ll know more once we actually get to talk to him. He then needs to pivot to the callousness of suggesting we leave a soldier behind. He should get loud and angry telling them, “We NEVER leave a soldier behind no matter what we may THINK he may have done. We bring him home and we sort it out later, but we don’t abandon the men and women who serve our country, we don’t abandon our fellow Americans.” And then he should list all the times in the last 20 years or so that a president exchanged prisoners for POWs. He should end with something like, “Some Republicans are threatening to impeach me because I sought to bring home a captured American soldier. I will never apologize for protecting our troops, I will never apologize for saving the life of an American serviceman. If they want to impeach me, so be it.”
His approval rating would go up 5 points overnight. He has a real opportunity here to put Republicans back on their heels by appealing to the American people’s sense of decency. This is an issue on which he can win big if he gets mad and leans into it.
Andrew McCarthy, who’s written an entire book that builds a case for impeachment against Obama
Oh - amazed he has not released an iPhone app - you know - enter the things that piss you off about Obama, the dates, and a few other factors & the presto, a fully synthesized fecal laden cased is spit out - ready for ranting.
If the Republicans proceed with this, it will just re-open all the sordid details of Reagan’s Iran-Contra prisoner exchange… which was done, of course, completely without Congressional notice.
No reason to fear, the GOP will continue to make complete fools of themselves over this. It is all they have. The backlash is coming and it will be ugly.
Since there is no statute of limitation on murder, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and a few others should be brought up on charges for murdering over 4,500 U.S. soldiers and millions of Iraqi’s shouldn’t they? Let’s have those trials first and see who goes down.
Normally, I would agree but this is going to be a base election in which both parties are fighting to turn out their people. Nothing on this planet would excite the Republican base more than the idea of getting rid of that terrible nigra in the WH. If the demand for impeachment on the right gets too loud they could risk suppressing a dejected base.
