Discussion: Comma Drama: Stickler Pompeo Often Instructs Staff On Proper Usage

Grammar is fluid, Pompeo is a idiot.

Does he also comment on drumps speaking/tweets?

But where does he stand on the Oxford Comma

“The administration is committed to achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace agreement, and remains optimistic that progress can be made.”

The reason the writer put the comma in was to help the reader parse the “…and…and…” mess. Perfectly sensible. Of course, the sentence involves an awkward multiple conjunction of cliches and should be re-written anyway.

Similarly, although fonts and margin size are not grammar (either), they’re relevant to visual parsing of text. It’s not hard to understand how people who have to read through piles of the stuff would want some minimal standards of clarity. Even mass murderers have to work within the human perceptual and cognitive system…

That’s the best thing I’ve heard about Pompeo. It may be his greatest achievement at the State Department.

I’m kinda Team Pompeii on his his one. I can’t stand getting a letter/correspondence from a business with typos or spelling errors. I think a department like his should expect and demand better standards. Wish there was someone like that in the White House.

Pompeo is far from an idiot. He may be the smartest guy in the Trump Administration. He is, however, an opportunist with great ambition.

I’m a fan of Chicago style, but no fan of Pompeo

The absurdity is off the charts here…this is a man that is intimately aware of the criminality of the Trump administration from his time in the intelligence community, he KNOWS EVERYTHING…but yeah…commas

If he believes in the Chicago Style Manual, then he would insist on the Oxford or serial comma.

AP for me (most days - :relaxed:)

No credit for his re-branding the State Department as the “Department of Swagger”?

That exactitude precisely frames my freshman comp teacher back in high school. Absolutely no room for errors. Period! At the time, we just attributed this trait to his shell-shocked service in Vietnam. He seemed to have several other issues as well, but seeing this insistence on grammatical purity from Pompeo leads me to believe he might have just been an asshole.

So says the man in charge of the rubble remaining of the former Department of State. I do not think proper grammar is the main problem.

Good start, now how about attacking the plague of people splitting words just because they can theoretically be split? My grand mother would appreciate it.

So, hire a copy editor and STFU.

I find having a few loudly voiced pet peeves about grammar and punctuation is a great substitute for actually knowing shit about shit.

Perhaps he has a point. If not for comma placement, the NRA would still be promoting hunter safety and responsibility. If not for a comma AND big money. Which is Pompeo’s primary issue?

it’s nice to know that while rome burns, it will do so with proper punctuation.
