Discussion: Comma Drama: Stickler Pompeo Often Instructs Staff On Proper Usage

Pompeo is reportedly a fan of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Along with the Chicago School of Right Wing Trickle Down Economics which we implemented in Chile, immediately after the military coup we supported and assisted on September 11, 1973.

Per CNN, having a grammatical pet peeve comes with the territory for secretaries of state. Colin Powell had a font fascination, while Condoleezza Rice had margin mania.

Hmm. Do fonts and margins have anything to do with grammar? I don’t think so. Those are merely formatting concerns.

All bugaboos of a small mind.

It’s an every day occurrence for many people. Even I some times do it.

Good punctuation makes all the difference in the world…

A big fat NOPE to that.

Can’t help but notice that the other two examples were Secretaries of State during the torture/lie-them-into-war years of Bush 2’s tenure. Perhaps this focus on maintaining rigid adherence to the rules of written composition helps them overlook all the lawlessness around them in their administration.

They can sleep at night knowing they drew a line somewhere against the forces of disorder and chaos.

I’m delighted that some people are trying to hold the line on proper grammar and punctuation. The rise of the internet has made me aware of what a poor grasp many of us have on the language . But, too, twitter’s no-edit policy, and the horrors of my voice to text dictation have been made me a far humbler critic.

In sum, I am delighted that there is something worthwhile to say about someone in this miserable administration. Too bad good writing can’t translate to good work!

One stands on top of the Earth, Sir, for it has no underside and, like the Oxford comma, offers but one place to stand.

The comma at least has to do with understanding what is being written, so he has elevated himself in my opinion of him. Whether or not you agree with what his policies are, I find it good that he wants people to understand what they mean.

For Powell, a fixation on fonts just shows he was only into style not substance, and Rice’s worries about margins means she knew she did not have much to say and was focused on making it look like it meant something. Two of the worse Secretaries of State so far.
