Discussion: College Suspends Christian Professor Who Wore Hijab Out Of Solidarity

Discussion for article #243855

Damn, we’re racking up a lot of families Trump has to take out. I bet this teacher’s parents are nice people, too. So sad to see them go…

I’m from Illinois and we all know that Wheaton is an ultra-religious, right-leaning school. However, this is somewhat shocking to me. The professor isn’t recruiting students to change their religion - she just donned a legal garment to express solidarity with a group. Even Bernie Sanders was allowed to speak at Liberty University.

What does “tenure” mean in your religion?

a full review of the “theological implications” of her statements would be required before her suspension was reconsidered.

Perhaps they should have done a full review BEFORE suspending her.

"While Islam and Christianity are both monotheistic, we believe there are fundamental differences between the two faiths, including what they teach about God’s revelation to humanity, the nature of God, the path to salvation and the life of prayer.”

Which does not at all contradict what the professor said. The God of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is the same God, the God of Abraham. Full stop. There are fundamental differences between some Christian denominations as well, but they still worship the same God.

She’s not converting to Islam, she’s wearing a headscarf. If you’re so insecure about your religion that you can’t tolerate someone wearing an “unusual” article of clothing, maybe you shouldn’t be running a college in the first place.

First, although I have never had any relationship with either institution, the Wheaton College in Illinois, which has become notorious for being a hotbed of bias and bigotry, is NOT the Weaton College located in Norton, Mass., which IS a reputable institution

I’m sorry that as an observant Christian Prof. Hawkins has been suspended for her desire to show solidarity with our fellow Americans in distress, but it does not surprise me at all that an evangelical institution would be indifferent to Jesus’ explicit teachings in the Parable of the Good Shepherd (Luke 10:25-37):

36 “Which of these three [the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan] do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

As a Jew, I am not up on Christian or Christianist theology, but in John 14 Jesus purportedly says, “14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms;”

At least the Wheaton administration concedes that Islam is at least as monotheistic as Christianity. Although one would hope that any organization would want to support ANYONE being victimized because of faith regardless of how many or how few gods they happen to believe in, being concerned as to whether an expression of support is consonant with particular details of theology seems remarkably dissonant with the teachings of most faith traditions.

Wheaton College receives a subsidy from the city of Wheaton. This crap is not going to go down well with the very diverse tax payers of this frankly awesome city.

Pretty fucking small-minded, Wheaton.

I hope you are right. This is backwards, intolerable behavior on the behalf of the college.

Ah Wheaton, where the students drink and dance to the devil music in in parking lots just off campus…

Yes, it’s that pompous certainty that all (most?) faiths have. It’s such a completely human trait. Hmmm…
