Whoa, I don’t think so. Better safe than sorry there, Grif! Think about how many young minds she could get to think critically!
Well, here’s one lady that no one complained about…rain or shine.
and that goes doubly for Grace Kelly when she was Princess of Monaco.
The good professor made the mistake of flaunting her education.
Exactly! I grew up in the Catholic church and wore a chapel veil to church each Sunday. As a child mine was smaller than what you have pictured here, but my mother wore a long veil like that for many years.
Wheaton is NOT very diverse. Approximately 90% of the population is white, with a median family income of over $100,000. Anecdotally, there is a church on virtually every corner (particularly in the area around Wheaton College). I have no problem believing that a) the school would do this; and b) that people will either support the college / not care that the professor was suspended.
And as a Jew in an egalitarian synagogue, I now wear a kippah or skullcap in services when saying prayers instead of the once traditional but always optional lady’s hat or lacey doily headcovering.
Rachael Ray’s terrorist head scarf!
No it was just compassion. No education necessary for that.
No her mistake was violating God’s commandment to hate thy neighbor, because they are different and have funny sounding names.
I was specifically referring to her saying that they all worshipped the same god. Which they all do. Karen Armstrong steps us through this fact is several of her outstanding books.
There is not a shred of evidence presented by the evangelical fundamentalist religulous kooks running the so-called university that the claims to" the nature of god, or the path of salvation and the life of prayer" are true. There is a great deal of objective evidence that prayer does not work. They have not presented any evidence that their supposed differences with islam are material or not. Both claims may be completely bogus.
The only approved headgear for Christian educators, apparently.
I know that Wheaton isn’t diverse - my university gets students from there into our graduate programs fairly frequently. In my professional dealings with Wheaton faculty, I have found them to be intelligent, reasonable, and committed to their fields and the broader mission of education. However, I don’t see what lack of diversity on the Wheaton campus itself has to do with this administrative decision that violates academic freedom, American policies, and basic decency.
My wife’s brother graduated from one Wheaton (Mass., luckily) and one of her cousins graduated from the other.
Wheaton (Ill.) is closer to being a real university than is any other evangelical university, but, as the suspension shows, scholarship there is on a leash.
Forget about the children. We must think about the “theological implications”.
I would love for one of the administrators to explain to us the difference between a hijab and a veil since Mary (alleged mother of Jesus) wears what appears to be both in almost every image of her ever.
If this Christian were white, not black, would the school have done the exact same thing?
Oy, gevalt, what a bad advertisement for evangelical Christianity! And during the holiday season, to boot.
FWIW, I think what Ms. Hawkins did was a beautiful expression of love for her fellow human. There is a serious lack of that coming from so many so-called “Christian” Americans. Though I am not a Christian, I was raised around many Southern Baptists. Believe it or not, I can recall a time when this act of solidarity would have been well-accepted by many Christian Americans. Obviously, not so now.
"While Islam and Christianity are both monotheistic, we believe there are fundamental differences between the two faiths, including what they teach about God’s revelation to humanity, the nature of God, the path to salvation and the life of prayer.”
Religion isn’t about God, see? It’s about what it teaches us about God. It’s the religion that’s important, apparently, rather than the deity.
Sounds pretty suspicious to me. I’d have the Department of Homeland Security investigate the old lady pronto. For the safety and security of the Republic.
If this Christian were white, not black, would the school have done the exact same thing?
Don’t forget female. (Of course men don’t wear head scarves, but my point is gender is another strike against this professor.)
