Stephanopolos is also quite famous for doing this.
In 11 days, I’m going to be showing Bernie Sanders what I think of his unwarranted attack on Hillary’s qualifications. I dearly hope my Republican friends and neighbors will be showing the gasbag Cruz what they think about his attack on our values. Despite my feelings about Trump, I can’t imagine anyone less deserving of elected office than Ted Cruz.
The “New York values” line is despicable, unconscionable, and unpresidential. But I don’t know that Cruz is anti-Semitic…he’s just an a$$hole to anyone who doesn’t share his opinions.
I don’t think “New York values” is an antisemitic comment. I’ve never heard of that and it’s odd that if was as universal a slur as Toobin says that it took near a month for it to draw ire. Cruz is a lot of things but I don’t think he’s an anti-Semite.
It’s not all that. The comment reefers to Liberal values. Hard core GOP’ers consider NYC a festering liberal den and calling it that plays well with their base. Same for California. Both those states have voted GOP’ers out of statewide office and can move on without that drag.

Cruz was tap dancing as fast as he could to come with “a lack of conservative values” as what he meant by NY values. It’s anti-Semitic through and through but in a whistling way. He’s saying what red state Rs say about NY, it is Jews who run things primarily banking. When he comes to my state and says “California values” he’ll mean the Jews who run the film industry and provide smut and sex and whoopie (which the religious right loves to watch by the way).

I agree. He’s being anti-liberal, not anti-Semitic. But even that’s despicable. As if liberals are somehow lesser human beings as they have no or low values. As if his values are the Gold Standard and if you disagree or fall short, you’re the other.

I’ve never specifically heard the term “New York values” but I certainly knew what that implied. And with the reference to money and media? Of course, it’s anti-Semitic. It’s not subtle (though subtle enough to have plausible deniability and to get Wolf Blitzer on his side)… And the point is not whether Cruz is or is not anti-Semitic himself. He’s using this as a dog whistle for political purposes.
Its a well known trope and sly dog whistle. If a person said something about how black people in some area love their fried chicken and watermelon and then tried to deny it, could it be anymore obvious to you? There’s history of this sort of thing. It goes way back.
There can be a difference between being an anti-Semite, and intentionally trying to appeal to those who truly are.
Is the money that important to Wolf that he would defend a person such as Cruz. What is even more disturbing is, Wolf is Jewish and lost family in the death camps in WWII and still defends this sort of shit.

I think harping on New York Values as being about media and money could be taken as dogwhistle anti-Semitism. However, that is the least of my worries. Its his Dominionist religious views that are most threatening to Jews and anyone who cares about this world. Cruz wants to establish a Christian Theocracy in the United States, he supports Israel’s most fanatical right wingers only to ensure that Israel plays their prophesied role in ushering in Armageddon – and he believes that Jews must accept Jesus as their savior or be damned to hell for eternity. So, not exactly the kind of person I would consider a true friend of the Tribe (or humanity in general.)
I believe when you try to appeal to those that are anti-semitic…you’re acting as a conduit for that anti-semitic bigotry to continue and become even more hardened in people’s minds.
He knew what he was doing. He’s not an innocent bystander repeating what he heard somewheres else. He’s being an instructor here to his flock of zealots, crazies and bigots. It doesn’t matter whether he believes it or not. He has no compunction in repeating it without a second thought.
