I still think it’s more of a slap at liberals…this is a well-worn ploy Conservatives often employ to appease their base. They exult the values of middle America while lambasting coastal values.
But who knows? Maybe for Cruz, it’s a twofer.

I never meant to suggest otherwise. You and I are in agreement 100%.
I have serious doubts that Trump believes any of the anti-Muslim or anti-Mexican rhetoric he spews. That’s what demagogues do. His possible lack of sincerity doesn’t make him any less odious. In fact, it might make him (and Cruz) even more so.

It kinda brought to my mind this one quote from Trent Lott a few years back…
Lott said: “When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either.”
Everyone that understood what a dog whistle was at the time, and understood exactly what he was saying. He could no longer hide his hidden bigotry for black people. And it just didn’t slip out…He was honoring a full-blown segregationist and bigot at his 100th birthday party.
Now its true that dog whistles about Jews somehow take on a different veneer, but its there all the same. Its usually always about money, banking, and the power it affords the group, which is somehow at odds with the rest of the country or their loyalty to the country at large. Its an unwarranted stereotype. Its those kinds of things and the like, that have been used to smear us as a culture for millennium.

Etcetera. Conservatives associate an adjective with a minority cultural identity, then use the adjective instead in political rhetoric and “polite” company to hide that they are talking about specific minority groups rather than just people who are lazy, or communists, or New Yorkers.

Beside it’s hard to call someone anti-semetic when their foreign policy is more loyal to Israeli interest than US interest.

For the people Cruz is communicating to, there is no essential difference between Jews and liberals. If you are a liberal, and you’re not a Jew, you might as well be one.

My family like so many others came to this country and lived on the Lower East Side, and then moved on to live in the Bronx. They also came here by way of Baltimore as an entry point.

New York, Commie, Liberal, Jew, Black, Feminist, LGBT, and Immigrant are all conflated in the New York Values slur. Yes, Cruz is being anti-liberal, but he’s also being anti- all the other things too. You can’t distinguish or differentiate them; historically, they’re all tied too closely together in right-wing rhetoric to assume Cruz means to insult any particular group rather than all of them.
So, yes, Toobin is correct in pointing out that New York Values is an anti-Semitic slur - as long as he’s not saying it’s solely anti-Semitic.

Harry Aleo was a Realtor and a well-known curmudgeon who called himself Mr. Conservative and had his office here in the Democratic stronghold of the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. He had photos of Reagan, Nixon and Eisenhower in his office along with handwritten signs saying things like Welcome to Looney Valley, the home of the cell phone, latte-sipping, left-wing liberals." He never acted on his feelings, just let his signs speak for themselves, but we all understood he was harmless.

The amorphous put-down of “New York values” is a host of things that conservatives don’t like. It encompasses the small town and anti-intellectual insecurities to the “East Coast Elite,” in spite of the fact that the dickhead graduated from Ivy League schools. It’s the dominant secularism. It’s the ethnic stew that is typical of big Eastern and even Midwestern cities.
It’s dog whistle nonsense that isn’t necessarily and certainly not entirely anti-Semitism.

“Dog whistling,” by design, is only heard by “those who can hear it” and is slyly coded language. Cruz’s pronouncements could be widely interpreted, including being anti-Semitic. Cruz is going to be explaining what he meant until the cows come home because he now realizes he is in jeopardy and deservedly so. But, whatever the case, he is going to get his ass kicked in the NY primary!!! Trump and Cruz are both poisonous.

My parents came from the Bronx and Brooklyn, lived in Alphabet City on the Lower East side for a while and I grew up on E. 20 St. near First Avenue before we moved to the more bucolic Queens. Snark. BTW the F line runs through Manhattan and Queens and so I rode it when I worked in the former and lived in the latter.
April 26 is the answer to when.

Machine-Gunner Ted is cooking what is considered treif among Jews because it is pork. Keeping kosher is also a New York value for some of them.

Sorry – but these whistles are understood very well. “NY values” does mean liberal but it started out as an anti-Semitic trope that still has legs… And when they start talking about CA values – or more typically “San Francisco” values – is code for “gay” more than environmentalism.
