Discussion for article #226496
This is SOP, folks, so don’t get your hopes up that marriage equality will actually come to Virginia next week.
In other words, the odds are very, very, very strong that SCOTUS will not stay the Fourth Circuit’s decision. Marriage equality will come to Virginia, but it will be next year (or the year after), not next week.
The state of Virginia is not making the request. Attorneys representing a county clerk in northern Virginia on Thursday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the decision by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond.
Let’s see what Sado-federalist, Roberts will do next.
Don’t you mean to say that odds are strong that SCOTUS will stay the Fourth Circuit’s decision? Not a lawyer here so perhaps I misunderstand “stay” vs “not stay”.

Shouldn’t we stop calling marriage “gay marriage” depending on who’s involved? Either one can marry who they love, or they can’t because someone else presumes to stand in their way in the name of the mass psychosis to which they’ve subscribed.
Do the conservative SC justices have any idea how to integrate social mores of the times with current legal issues? Because if they stay gay marriage and eventually rule against it, they’re going to look like total out of touch fools in ten years time. Not that they don’t look like that now. But in few years, they will simply look like ridiculous old men. A bunch of geezers that tried to stem the tide of social progression, hiding behind a bench and legalese.
SCOTUS has no need to take this case. There is no disagreement among the Circuit Courts. Roberts should, but probably won’t deny the petition to stay. He’ll think of something.
Are the emergency rooms preparing for the heterosexual gluteal trauma tsunami if Roberts doesn’t allow the stay?
A right delayed is a right denied.

A. They don’t care how posterity sees them. The only one of the sociopaths who cares is the Chief Injustice of the United States, who does care somewhat about his legacy – he currently stands about even with Roger Taney as worst Chief Justice of the United States in history. People will recall that Roger Taney and his ilk sent Dred Scott back into slavery, writing, “had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit.” Not as well known, Roger Taney and his ilk also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, legalizing the spread of slavery throughout the United States. On his own record, John Roberts has striven wholeheartedly to limit the ability of human Americans to have access to the courts, has sharply limited access of voters of ethnic, health, and/or economic challenges to the polls, has granted corporations more rights and fewer responsibilities than human Americans, has repeatedly allowed women and others to be swindled out of equal pay, has given free rein to the wealthy to buy elections, bribe politicians, and was barely restrained from allowing the wealthy to bribe judges as well. We can include in the foregoing his decision to allow people with faked sincere belief in some aspects of Catholic theology to ignore some of the same laws that everyone else are expected to obey. The only thing vaguely redeeming him in the eyes of posterity has been his decision not to scuttle Obamacare.
John Roberts joined the other injustices in their opposition to equality and support for DOMA. I suspect that there can be little doubt that he will stay the ability of gay and lesbian Virginians to marry.
I’m guessing it will be something along the lines of, “There is no longer any racism in this country, so therefore it follows that there’s no more prejudice against gay people… but since Kennedy isn’t here to make me be reasonable, I’m not going to let them get married. Sorry, sis. We’re adjourned!”
Just surrender, Dorothy, or whatever your drag name is, Roberts.
“…on the larger question of whether same-sex marriage is a constitutional right…”
…or what “God” wants.
You’ve got the logic backwards. Without a stay by SCOTUS, same-sex marriages are legal in Va.
Roberts asked same-sex marriage proponents to respond to an emergency request
Uhhhhh, because it’s our fucking constitutional right? Does that work for you, dumbass?
Chief Justice Roberts (left) is on vacation in Provincetown and can’t be reached for comment

It is not largely “a procedural matter” for couples who have been waiting decades to get married so they, too, can have the same rights as heterosexual couples.
Just saying …
Virginia is for Lovers.
Excuse me I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Someone said, “Justice delayed is justice denied.” Someone else said, “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” So there is hope, no matter what Roberts does next week. But I hope (and doubt) that he will send a strong signal that the time for injustice is over.
Call Roberts the activist out…LOUDLY but firmly!
