Discussion for article #244126
Here we go again.
Was the cop wearing a body cam? If not, why not? No autopsies. Why? Define “a combative subject.” Was the person armed or just using harsh language? Did the officers kill one combative subject and one non-combative subject?
There must be a better method of responding to a domestic disturbance.
As I replied in another article ( not necessarily TPM ) tazers are used on white people , guns are used on black people . ( Body cams not necessary ) . /s
Another white cop who feared for his life. These little nancy-boys should turn in their badges and guns and go work as clerks in Walmart or Home Depot. Leave the tough job of policing to men who are not so easily terrified.
Not necessarily. 21 year old college student wielding a small axe shot four times by campus police two weeks ago: http://www.dentonrc.com/local-news/local-news-headlines/20151216-unt-officer-s-name-video-released-in-fatal-shooting-case.ece
Who shoots a kid holding a small axe? That’s what a taser is for. If that doesn’t bring him, down, than shoot him, I guess. No one holds a small axe and breaks car windows who isn’t tripping on some bad drugs. Doesn’t deserve death.
In this case the argument was settled by killing everyone involved it seems… But then trying to discern detail from the article is difficult. AP needs to work on their reporting and writing skills. At least they corrected the names of those killed. At a minimum they should clarify if possible what was happening when the cop showed up an why he acted as he did. The article provides none of this.

A more detailed article on this can be found here:
From that article the 19 yr old was shot 7 times but there was no reason given for why this many shots were fired… No information on what happened to the other person or why they were shot.
A policeman will shoot if anything resembling a weapon is in someone’s hands. Many times, as we’ve seen, a person can be unarmed and fleeing and still get shot and killed. Without a video or other incontrovertible evidence a cop will write a report that he was threatened with imminent death or injury and get off free and clear.
And “resembling a weapon” pretty much means anything. Snickers bar? Weapon. Wallet? weapon.
Yep, as we saw in Florida. Trayvon Martin died with snickers and a big gulp. I myself have been challenged over a banjo case. I had to exit the car and lay down. The cop removed the banjo case from the car and holding his weapon on it…he opened it and found …a Vega open back banjo. Being a white guy I was told to go on my way. He couldn’t make up his mind about keeping the banjo in the case or not tho…
A person could get killed by a cop in Chicago when resisting or not resisting. You never know. I understand why they react the way they do. They see everyone as a threat … They have to. It’s a shame. When I was a kid (a looong time ago) I was taught to trust a cop …to look to them for protection. I wouldn’t teach my grandson that these days and I find that ineffably sad. I want to think of them as looking out for the innocent folks. “To serve and protect.” is what is written on our local cop cars. Mostly I still can do that with our local cops in my town. I wouldn’t trust a Chicago cop however.
Black Lives DON’T Matter. Shame on all of us
God dam it,it’s Christmas… can’t the cops give it a break for a few days.
Further information:
It’s on the front page of NYT. Not a single cop will be disciplined or lose his job though the city will once again pay out damages. Currently they’ve paid out about $500 million settling police cases. From the chillingly detached report.
.
4:25 a.m. on Saturday when they were “confronted by a combative subject, resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon.” The woman was “accidentally struck,” the police said.
The police department also offered their version of “thoughts and prayers.”
department extended “its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
Tamir Rice in Cleveland had a toy gun and when the 911 call made to the police the caller said it’s a kid and I’m pretty sure it’s a toy gun That part never got to the cop who killed the boy.
The police don’t seem to understand that mistakes are not all equal. When I make one, my breakfast eggs have a hard yoke instead of runny. When they make a mistake, someone dies.
That this incident in no longer an outrage…is outrageous.
The big question, and the on the police don’t want to provide any details (which is a huge tell), is the woman. From earlier reports, she was just a neighbor that opened her doors when the cops started shooting…so they turned around and shot her too.
According to the CNN story that darrtown linked to above, it sounds like the 19 year old, Quintonio LeGrier, was threatening his father with a baseball bat. The mother (I think) called 9/11, and asked the downstairs neighbor, Bettie Jones, to open the front door for the cops. Apparently as Jones opened the door, LeGrier came running down the stairs with the bat, and the cop started firing. The CNN article cites family and unspecified witnesses for this version of events, with the cops, as you note, not offering any details yet, but expressing comdolences to Ms. Jones’s family. So my guess is they’ll go with some version of “killing LeGrier was justified, Ms. Jones’ death was an unfortunate but unavoidable accident.” I have my doubts about both of those propositions, but not much evidence to go on one way or the other.
