Discussion: Chicago Police Officer Fatally Shoots Man And Woman

I dream of a non-lethal gun that shoots a fast-drying marshmallow foam, encasing the suspect / subject in an instant in a giant, tasty but incapacitating ball of marshmallow. Then you just roll 'em into the paddy wagon and taking them to a warm secure room (jail or hospital, depending on the circumstances) and let it melt off.

In the meantime, we need body cameras, better rules of engagement, better training, and better accountability.

Some CPD officers hate microphones as well. There’s a lot left unanswered, but at least CPD stopped letting the FOP spokesman be the person that is interviewed by media on site. The difference in the reporting is glaring. The recently released recordings of McDonald, Johnson and others are clearly refutations of the FOP descriptions of shooting incidents.

Here’s some advice if you want to stay alive: don’t call the cops.

There are black folks everywhere who have experienced police harassment/brutality, and their attitude is to never call a cop, regardless of what kind of crime has been committed. They’ll accept the consequences of the crime, assault, theft, whatever rather than take the chance of being killed by an overheated guy in uniform.

From NYT reporting Ms. Jones’s boyfriend who witnessed the shooting. LeGrier was standing next to Jones when the cops started shooting.

Ms. Jones’s boyfriend, who asked not to be named, said that he had been present when the shooting occurred, and that Ms. Jones had gotten up from bed to open a front door — shared by the first and second floors — for arriving police officers. He said Mr. LeGrier’s father, who is also the landlord for the building, had telephoned Ms. Jones from the second floor to alert her that the police were on their way and needed to be let in.

@darrtown You may have read this already but it is reporting based on an eyewitness, the boyfriend of the dead woman. You’re right, all she was open a door and LeGrier was standing next to her.

He said that when the officers arrived, Mr. LeGrier seemed to have rushed to the bottom of the stairs with his bat at nearly the same time Ms. Jones was opening the door.

“Then the shooting just started coming — bam, bam, bam!” he said. What appeared to be one bullet left a hole in the wall of a first-floor foyer wall, a bedroom and a bathroom, traveling all the way to Ms. Jones’s kitchen, where she had celebrated Christmas with some of her five grown children hours earlier.

I didn’t report details of this incident. The articles I linked to do that…and rather poorly in my estimation. There’s a LOT the police are not saying which as @DaveyJones64 said is telling …very telling. The lady who was killed only opened a door as far as I can tell.

Once my home was broken into and my security company called me and called the police. I raced home and beat the police there by a few minutes. They showed up, guns drawn. I had to explain that I was the home owner. I suspect that had I been Hispanic (45% of my city’s population) I might have gotten shot because those officers were absolutely ready to shoot. This was fully 25 years ago and times were a bit different.

Running downstairs because his mom called the cops?

Not a threat to men with guns who happened to get there before he left the house with the bat in hand?

Two people dead. Why?

Merry Christmas.

Why? Murder most foul.

Did you read the article that I linked up thread? Apparently the young man had some mental issues and was threatening somebody with a bat and the cops were called. Imagine a cop confronted by an angry 19yr old wielding an aluminum bat. Most would shoot at center mass out of self preservation. Now, here I am making HUGE assumptions since I have next to no detail of the building, family relationships and a whole lot more. BUT the scenario I just described absent all the attendant stuff would result in a shooting given that most police aren’t creative enough to come up with an alternative given that they might have had seconds to react. I don’t know, the articles I’ve found on this incident don’t say.

Seriously?

BUT the scenario I just described absent all the attendant stuff would result in a shooting given that most police aren’t creative enough to come up with an alternative…

Depends, doesn’t it. Now what could possibly point to a different result?

Yes, seriously.
We’ve seen Freddie Gary die in a Police van, Sandra Bland died in her jail cell for an incorrect lane change, Trayvon Martin died because he walked thru a gated neighborhood, Tamar Rice died because he had a toy gun. These are just a few. So if youngster came at a cop with a bat? Yes … seriously.

As I said a different result comes many times if the person under police scrutiny is…white. Or if that cop just doesn’t want to shoot. For whatever reason.

I think we’re on the same page here.

Let’s face it , cops have become just trigger-happy murderers and the only way to reverse this is to fire every one and start over with people who really want to “protect and serve” not just the ones who get their jollies wearing a gun.
