I can understand needing to keep order and peace on campuses to foster an environment that’s conducive to education, so I don’t disagree outright, but this does begin to tread on my free speech sensibilities. I’m not sure I support it either. Perhaps I don’t understand how truly offensive the flag is, because I totally agree that students shouldn’t be allowed to wear hoods and white sheets to school.
Pretty sure school district restrictions against clothing with gang or satanic symbols have already been upheld in court.
School uniforms?
Prohibiting Nazi regalia?
Prohibiting hate speech?
Free speech has limits, especially in educational environments. This is to protect children, as well as rights.

I don’t think we do, as white folks that is. I find it offensive, but not in the real and visceral way my brown friends have expressed feeling, and that makes perfect sense. I’m not having trouble with this dress code rule on free speech grounds tho. That flag clearly is an incitement at this point, particularly considering the current level of awareness and raw nerves, and any asshat wearing it to school who gets his face stomped on the playground got exactly what he was deliberately trying to instigate. For the safety and well-being of the kids, it’s a legitimate preventative measure. Dress codes have been upheld plenty of times before.

I was just getting ready to post that I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by at least some of South Carolina’s actions lately and that I have hope for the future. I don’t understand your POV, could you explain more?
You’ll be surprised, as I was, to learn that Charleston SC is number one among tourist destinations in the country according to polls taken by travel magazines such as Conde Nast. Also little discussed fact is the mayor there is the longest serving Democratic mayor in the country, about 25 years.

It was the flag of a set of traitors to the United States of America who committed their treason in order to preserve what they called their “peculiar institution” otherwise known as slavery…if that isn’t enough to disgust you, I don’t know what would. No nation on earth allows the free and open display of symbols and monuments of a group that tried to destroy that nation.
