This is one area where I have to disagree. Jawboning is a big part of the job. Democratic presidents from Roosevelt to Carter used to do it routinely. Jawboningâs part of the job, certainly, but the problem for a certain swathe of American labor is that their counterparts in other countries are willing to work for less, along with increasing automation. Trump can call up one company and jawbone them but I donât think he can save every $25-an-hour manufacturing job thatâs on its way out the door that way. If you donât have a more forward-looking, adaptive set of plans than that youâll have a couple of victories to crow about misleadingly amid a landscape that basically hasnât changed.
