ā€œIf you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell - give him someone to look down on and he’ll empty his own pockets for you.ā€

~LBJ to Bill Moyers (circa 1960), as related in ā€œWhat a Real President Was Likeā€, Washington Post, November 13, 1988.

I think he had a tiny little bit of a point that he expressed badly. Flying the flag in the first place was a matter of treason and bigotry. For which people raised from birth in an unpatriotic atmosphere of racism can be understood and possibly even forgiven. Putting the flag back up in the 20th century goes from Jefferson Davis to Kim Davis: people who really, truly should have known better making a choice to be evil.

`GOP 2016er’?

Wow! Here’s hoping that Santa brings TPM an editor.

He is right. All the confederate states did was start an armed insurrection against the USA, which is just treason, not some big crime. And, it resulted in more deaths to US citizens than WWII. It was for a noble cause though, the right to keep other people locked up as slaves, to be tortured or killed at their owners whim. Of course the South is proud of that history.

Oh, come on, now! McCain was misled!

He might be more gaffe prone than Romney was. For God’s sake, is that possible??

So he is for armed treason in defense of slavery?

Good to know.

You all bitching have to realize this is the only way the rest of the R’s will understand and get on board. He’s the most ā€œleftā€ on this issue in the entire GOP. Baby steps.

He’s also not talking about the treason part. He’s explaining why people might have a problem with the flags and statues right now and maybe didn’t in prior years.

You’d think that being 4% would at least make him stop saying nonsense… who is he afraid to offend? The confederate flag lovers are all rooting for Cruz and Trump anyway.

Boy, this Bush is really dense. I guess it is a family trait.

To be honest I could care less about Bush, not trying to sell anything. Prefer Bernie, Hillary if necessary. No dog in this one just my take.

Later? Is Bush dumb, or what?

non-curable hoof-in-mouth disease. rampant affliction within the gop. pray for them, they know not what they do.

Like, actually, you know? there is no problem with the Confederate flag. Not any longer, at any rate. It’s a particular Confederate -battle flag- that was adopted later on at issue. And, yeah, racism is pretty much at the heart of everything.

No doubt about it. If Jeb!Ya was a cartoon character, he’d be Schlep-rock Flintstone.

George Zimmerman and other killings in Florida might not have happened if Jeb!? had not signed a Stand Your Ground law while governor. Will he soon be telling us how ALEC influenced that decision, no? Thought so.
