What a dickish move by Kobach. Now he wants a replacement Democratic candidate.
These Republicants always have a way of moving their goalposts. Even his date on when ballots need to be printed has shifted, has it not? Kobach should have entered a counter-suit at the time he was arguing the merits of his side. The Dems should do absolutely nothing to replace Taylor. Let Kobach sweat it out. Let him spend more of the tax-payer money trying to defend a suit likely to end up in another decision against him…see where that gets him with the public. They already see him for the partisan hack that he is…
I feel fairly certain that, much like Sen. Angus King, Democrats have gotten assurances that Orman will caucus with them. Why else would the Democratic candidate pull out so quickly, and why else would Democrats have encouraged him to do so unless they knew the seat would be safe?
Well, if I was in the Democratic Party in Kansas, I would replace Taylor with a Mynah Bird trained to say “Kris Kobach is a jackass” and to demand debates with Roberts.
In Boehner’s district in Ohio the local democrats did not put up even a straw candidate. Boehner was to only guy on the ballot. Here in AZ my local state senator (democrat) will be on the ballot by himself. So there are situations where both parties can and do run w/o opposition.
If that scenario plays out (i.e. Rep have 50 and Dems have 49), he’ll be smart to look out 2 years to 2016. If the Repubs win the Senate majority in 2014, it will likely be very short-lived and end with the 2016 election. So if this guy is as smart as he seems, he’ll know enough to caucus with the side that has a better chance of holding the majority in the long term.
Not to mention, Orman will have won election because the Democratic candidate pulled out of the race specifically to drive that result. No matter how coy Orman’s being publicly, I find it hard to believe that Democrats would have encouraged Taylor to withdraw if they didn’t already have a commitment from Orman to caucus with them.
