Discussion: Bossie To Democratic Strategist: 'You're Out Of Your Cotton-Picking Mind'

ā€œHis remarks do not reflect the sentiments of Fox News and we do not in any way condone them.ā€

Except by continuing to pay him for his ā€œappearances,ā€ obviously.

Bossie’s comments today were deeply offensive and wholly inappropriate,ā€ the statement said. ā€œHis remarks do not reflect the sentiments of Fox News and we do not in any way condone them.ā€

Almost certainly planned. The cost in next-day apologies is factored in. A certain type of viewer loves that shit.

He really meant ''Cotton-picking, finger-licking, chicken-plucker" mind, but couldn’t remember all the words.

No, you chose your words with great care, jackass. ā€œCotton-pickingā€ has faded from common usage. Nice try, though, shit-for-brains. Oops - sorry - should have been more careful with my words. I am truly sorry if anyone who has shit for brains was offended.

Good point. It’s as dated as ā€œkeenā€ or ā€œswell.ā€ And it’s faded for a reason. Even if it were still current, considerate people would not use it and especially not to a black person.

The Thunder fired the last guy who said it.

Although Bossie is an egregious little prig you have to give Payne credit for reminding us what is important.

I’ll say this about the liberal bubble - it tricks me into thinking we, as a society, have progressed further than we have. I’m not convinced the racist phrase was used intentionally. I think it’s simply part of the guy’s lexicon and shows how ingrained racism still is in large segments of society.

The dog whislte was missing so this clown brings a freakin bullhorn.

I swear, there’s always some not-ready-for-prime-time fox’er on the weekend looking to make a name for him/herself by bringing the extra-strength racism.

I’d give the guy a pass. I’m not from the South, but I might use the phrase ā€œout of your cotton-pickin’ mindā€ to express amazement–and likely with a white person. His apology sounds sincere.

We can be too sensitive here. Payne was entirely right to respond as he did, but this incident is easily overstated.

ā€œBossieā€ Really?

As we all know, Trump’s election took the white hoods off.
You saw the White Supremacy marches. No hoods.
You’ve read Roseanne’s racism. No hood.
Hoods may be gone, but consequences still exist.

I mean, imagine the embarrassment at Bossie’s next clan rally.
For apologizing, I mean…

I learned ā€œare you out of your cotton picking mindā€as a young child. Since the context was always a white-on-white insult, I am chagrined to say I never thought about the racial overtones until today.

ā€˜out of your cotton-picking mind’ is a phrase I heard often enough as a child, but never heard it used as a racial epitaph. Always white on white. I haven’t heard or even thought about this expression since my childhood. Obviously, hearing it today I get the racial implications. It lept off the screen at me. I can’t recall the last time I heard anyone use this expression, and can’t imagine what made Bossie use it.

I would give him a pass, but then I remember he campaigned for Trump the racist, and was on the TV to defend Trump’s racist, nazi tactics. So, I’m just going to go ahead and assume he’s a racist nazi too.

He said the soft part loud…

I heard it a few times as a kid too. I once asked my mom why it was insulting. She simply said, ā€œWho are ā€˜cotton pickers’ and why is thinking of them as ā€˜out of their minds’ a bad thing?ā€ It didn’t take long to click in my little kid mind.

What? No way, ā€œkeenā€ is still boss, daddy-o!
