Discussion: Biden Refuses To Apologize After Sharing Anecdote Aides Told Him To Change

Has anyone acknowledged that James O. Eastland was in fact a Democrat? Somebody ask Biden how things went working hand in hand with the Republicans during the Obama administration.

Once again, the Bernie Bros and the HuffPost Social Justice Warriors are out gunning for another White, Straight, Male, Political scalp to hang on their belts to help B.S. and Kamala Harris climb out of the single-digits, with the issue being furiously fanned by the Russian Trolls (and if you don’t see that you are a fool.)

Joe Biden started in the Senate in 1973. That was a different time, when you could vehemently oppose Republicans on the Senate Floor, but be good friends with them after the days work was done (just like the REST OF US in the 70’s!)

He made a lot of friends among the other politicians he worked with every day for 30 years (some of them far-right figures with repugnant ideas) and he won’t apologize for that fact, and he shouldn’t have to.

I won’t apologize for my Right-Wing Friends either, and I won’t change my feelings towards them because some idiot 20-something SJW over at HuffPost looking to get more column-inches gets their undies in a bundle over it.
Fuck that.
They are MY FRIENDS and I won’t apologize for them. Joe should not have to either.
People who ABANDON THEIR FRIENDS because of Political Pressure should NEVER BE TRUSTED. Period.
That is the very definition of a “Wind-Sock Politician” and the LAST thing we need as President.

This is the kind of “Political Purity” testing that will doom the entire Democratic Party to DEFEAT in 2020 and usher in Dictator Trump because of Self-Righteous Assholes demanding we ALL embrace their PROGRESSIVE PURITY GROUP THINK.

Fuck them sideways.

Joe isn’t my first choice for the Democratic Nomination, but I won’t ding him for not apologizing for making friends over 30 years.

But here we are in 2019 when we know that words matter, and that every word matters. It’s important not to make one’s point with off-handed words and phrases that are hurtful to, for example, women or people of color, then double down without apology and say “Y’all should know me better than to think I meant anything wrong by that.” A graduate school professor once told me that I was responsible not for what I mean to say, but for what I am heard to say.

I don’t think he needs to apologize for his larger point about needing to work across party lines to get legislation passed.

I do think he needs to apologize (or at least acknowledge) for not understanding how hurtful the statement “He didn’t call me boy, he called me son” is to so many people.

By refusing to not acknowledge this, he is stooping to the level where Democrats should not go.

There’s always a trade off when voting for an older or a younger candidate. With the older candidates you get experience and, usually, a cooler head. However, what I need to see in that candidate is a willingness to accept that he or she is not going to be quite with the times because of their age and to approach that with some humility and try to catch up. I am not seeing that with Biden. He is stubborn and thinks he already knows it all and is perfect as he is. As cute and touching as his friendship with Obama is, I suspect he feels it inoculates him in some way from needing to examine his own biases or be questioned about his racial attitudes.
Now, when looking at a younger candidate, you have that energy and the fact that they are more likely to have their finger on the pulse of what the country needs right now, but they need to have humility, too. Anyone who hasn’t been President before is going to have a lot to learn, and quickly. They’ll need to “level up.” Although I disagreed with some of his decisions, it was clear President Obama was aware of that and threw all of his energy into learning what he needed to know and respecting the enormity of his task. Biden is pretty much his mirror opposite in this regard.
Of course, it goes without saying that I will vote without hesitation for whoever wins the nomination. I just hope it isn’t Biden.

It’s easy for a white man to say, He didn’t call me boy." Of course he didn’t. Biden is white.

Which only serves the Right’s purposes to point and laugh at the weak Left who need smelling salts and safe spaces if they hear the wrong word.

People could just grow up a bit, stop harping on little shit.

I’m sure every candidate has said things in their lives that could be interpreted as insensitive by one person or another.

Is this Biden’s Sista Souljah moment, except with a large part of the Dem base?

This is not perfect, and I know some will disagree, but in political races, it is about the long game.

Historically, to win elections, candidates have to track to the middle. Bernie is too far left and his use of the term, ‘socialism’, scares people. Yes, we have social security and other entitlements, but the average voter does not see those for what they are. I know and you know they are socialistic policies. In fact, they are welfare, and should be characterized that way, but that is way too much for the middle ground white voter. And, like it or not, the middle ground voter (no matter what ethnic origin) are the ones who vote.

Getting people to vote is basic marketing. Define your product, make your audience believe they need your product, and then sell the product using the terms the audience wants to hear. Realize you have a short time to cut through the noise so when you are in front of your audience, you have 30 – seconds to close the deal.

This was HRC’s failure. While she may not have been the best candidate, she did beat Trump. And aside from the foreign interference and failure to shore up the vote in PA (literally the Keystone State), she failed to capitalize on the time in front of the voters. Instead of explaining her policies, HRC put it on the voter to ‘go to her website’ to read her white papers. BULLSHIT.

It is not up to the ‘buyer’ to learn about the policies, not more than it is up to the buyer to wonder if their new car has a back-up camera. If back-up cameras are important to me, then tell me!

Before the last few weeks, I thought Warren was old news. She has been around saying the same things since her first appearances on John Stewart. I stopped paying attention. However, she has successfully been able to utilize every minute she has before her ‘buyers’ to articulate clear policy actions both domestically and on foreign policy. Don’t ask me to repeat her policy ideas. I can’t and I don’t need to. I just like what she is doing and saying.

Biden is ahead because he does represent a sense of adulthood, experience, and assurance that there is a path back to sanity. If Biden says something that seems contrary to some voters, then that is what it is. And, anyone in public life for two minutes has a history, good or bad. That history will haunt. Hell, we all have history that ‘knowing what we know now’ would be different. It is our ability to change that is a sign of humility and intelligence. Biden is tracking to the middle and presenting himself as the candidate who can heal our wounds. Knowing that electorate is exhausted, this is a smart strategy. But, none of us know if it will work. Yet.

For now, the Democrats need to stop the infighting before it gets out of control. If we had any brains at all, anyone who is less than in the top five candidates per the polling should just drop out of the race. BETO needs to run against Cornyn, and others need to find their place in the sun somewhere else.

This is hard, because I like what Pete says. I like the force and focus of Kamala. If they dropped now, their ideas would be in the marketplace. But, as long as 21 stand for election, then no one is standing for election. It is a shit show and Trump knows it.

Because we don’t have a candidate, Trump is running to the future. We need to give him a foil, with everyone, and I mean everyone who hates Trump and all he stands for, to be firmly and vigorously against him, and in a FULL support of the candidate, or the ticket.

Anything less is suicide by voter.

“There’s not a racist bone in my body…”

I’m always suspicious when anybody says that.

The sad reality is that a most white folks are racist to some extent and if you refuse to work with anyone that has any bit of racism you never will get anything done. And in politics you’ll have to work with some of the most racist like it or not.The other sad thing is this kind of admission is what will get the racist white vote you probably need to get a landslide win that will cover the EC. Something Hillary didn’t get which cost her the election and cost the US a decent human being for president.

We all have racist bones in our body.

It’s when you recognize that, we begin to heal.

All I have to add to this is that it’s better that Biden have a self-inflicted gaffe/controversy now so that we can see how he responds and deals with it. Can’t make mistakes like this in the general, but if voters forgive him anyway it might not matter. Personally, I feel he inadvertently lit a fire under Booker and Harris and drew some raised eyebrows from black voters. Harris’ comment is the one that will be toughest for Biden to deal with. It also touches upon his handling of Anita Hill. These backroom deals with racists and sexists have costs and it’s women and minorities who pay them for the sake of national stability. In 2019, those folks are done payin’. That’s Joe’s challenge in a nutshell.

This is a political campaign, people are going to go after each other. Then when it’s over, they all get behind the winner and put up a united front.

If he upped his segregationist comments and really got serious about how civil it all is, he could switch parties and just might have a chance to run as a republican and beat Trump.

It’s like when people say, “Some of my best friends are…”

Why, some of my best friends romanticize working with virulent racists!

Booker barely has a pulse, stuck with Yang, Delaney & Co. sitting close, down at the end of the bench. I understand his position but it’s really just fake outrage for a candidate who says all the right thing but can’t get any traction. So now he’s newsworthy but using identity politics to get attention isn’t going to work. Biden IMO doesn’t deserve any sympathy. His reminiscing will hurt his poll numbers and make him look and sound like grandpa. Let’s just hope his team doesn’t use this as an opportunity where it’s ‘moderate’ Joe against the Lefties.

Yep, but here we have a candidate who says he’s not racist at all. That he “doesn’t have a racist bone in his body.” Do we want a President that lacking in self-awareness? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d take him over Trump any day of the week, but I’d prefer not to have to.

At what point should we start applying standards to all the candidates statement? Seems like everything they say from the beginning should be sifted and considered. A lot of what Biden is saying at this point is falling thru the sift box.
