Discussion: Beto Raises $6.1M In First 24 Hours Of Campaign, Surpassing Other Candidates

Why? Because he’s a gay brainiac? Let’s search our memories because I could swear we had a black President that one time, twice actually, and people whose judgment I respect thought when he first ran there was no way and Clinton had a better chance. Let’s see what kind of case Buttigieg makes for himself and how much traction he gets. He’s the absolute antithesis of Trump and maybe a Harvard magna and Rhodes scholar who can speak five languages can figure out how to beat him too.

And he plays the piano, matt!

Some of which he learned to read books that weren’t translated to English. Damn lazy millennials!

I’m assuming that a lot of that came from small donors that he can tap $20-$25/month from as long as he is in it too. I have no doubt that he can garner support on the road with retail style politics. I wonder how well he will match up in the debates on a national scale when it’s not one-on-one. I’m guessing he will be a media darling too. That is something the other candidates will have to contend with.

Well the Democratic candidate actually did win 3 million more votes than the Republican.

Maybe this time those that are defeated in the primaries can actually, you know, enthusiastically campaign for the eventual nominee without giving the impression that they’re being forced into making a hostage tape. And they might also convince their primary supporters to get over their pernicious feelings of butt-hurt.

That might help.

So that would be 8 languages. English lives matter!

Don’t be so sure about that.

Buttigieg is already talking to Trump’s base. He went on Fox News yesterday morning and was interviewed by Chris Wallace.

He’s attractive in a lot of ways and you don’t want to discount that. He’s a talented, thoughtful person, and he pursued Cruz very doggedly and came pretty close. I’m content to put all these people through the mill and see who ends up looking like the best campaigner. I don’t think we should play it safe, though, I’ll say that, with somebody like Biden. We’re not safe now, and we’re betting the house here. He’d generate very little enthusiasm. He seems to be heaving himself wearily out of his easy chair and saying fine, damn it, I’ll save the nation since you obviously have nobody else who can do it. He’s a past-his-prime undercard middleweight if you ask me.

Agreed. I adore the man, but this country isn’t going to elect an LGBT just yet. Someday soon, I sure hope. We’re just not there yet.

I will always wonder if the tragedy of Biden’s son was one of those moments in History.

So many many mistakes that Hillary got caught up in…One obvious one to me was that Barack should have installed Hillary in a safe (but visible) cabinet spot. Not that she couldn’t do State. She DID and was one of the most admired women at the time.

But safe would mean a smaller GOP target.

Trump’s election was a “planets all aligned from the sun situation” which I would like to portray as a time in which Americans got a wake-up call to participate in their own government. In 2016 I was not very much impressed by the consistent notions on our side of the election that participating in the Franchise was tantamount to something like boycotting a flower shop or not.

The same might be said about a woman candidate.

I agree with what you said about Beto. I get it that you don’t support Biden. He hasn’t announced a candidacy yet. If he does,I will support him. Beyond that,I am uncommitted.

One of the real issues within minority communities, and one I’m doing all I can to change, is hostility toward the LGBT community. It’s not a small thing either. I don’t think Pete could get the nomination because of if actually. Makes me really sad.

I’m telling you, in spite of it being time for women and minorities be viable canidates for POTUS and VPOTUS, it’s probably going to take 2 white guys on the D ticket to make sure we get a D, P and VP. And if we get Beto and Joe they will put in a lot of women and minorities that can then be elected 8 years after them.

That is a funny clip!

Nobody can say that “gay is not practical”. Buttigieg is making a smart move.

Another gay politician impressed me tremendously during the OCCUPY Movement, some years back. When questioned about OCCUPY, Barney Frank was one of the few politicians who consistently referenced Congress and how the Movement had to connect its goals with electing more members of Congress

I’m not saying let’s go all in for Buttigieg. I’m aware of the issue just like you, I’m not nuts despite what people say. But how many people discounted Obama, said he seems great but we’re not ready? I think the country has really come along with LGBT issues, in large part because you can’t self-segregate from it like you can with race. Sooner or later a cousin or a sibling or a child comes out and suddenly you have to reconcile your prejudices with what you know in your heart–that this person isn’t wrong, isn’t bad, isn’t corrupt. So with Buttigieg, what’s the percentage of votes we lose with him that we wouldn’t have gotten anyway because he has a D after his name? Just to be a contrarian I’m not willing to write him off. He knows he’s gay himself and yet he’s running, and he’s very, very far from stupid.

I think Donald’s mind is only scared of a white guy. Woman or minority he assumes he’s better than and a majority of votes are like minded white, racist, misogynist guys.

A significant portion of the black and brown vote. That’s what we’d lose. That’s why this is nothing like Obama’s run.
