Discussion for article #240312
I really admire Bernie Sanders, and have seen him surge in NH and Iowa. However, leading by one percentage point in a poll with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percent hardly makes the case that Bernie is really leading in Iowa.
As I recall, in 2008 Hillary won every state. I mean, if you understood statistics, the true meaning of the numbers, margins of error and stuff.
How dare you imply that Hillary Clinton hasn’t already won all the caucusses and primaries! My truthiness tells me that she’s already been elected President and has been added to Mount Rushmore and retroactively made the 5th Beatle.
Sure, but it certainly suggests that the trend, confirmed by pretty much every poll, of Hillary losing support and Sanders gaining support, has continued, and that he appears to have caught up to her in Iowa.
Can Bernie defeat Trump?
…and 6 months ago, how silly would that have sounded?
Go Bernie. I honestly believe we ain’t seen nothing yet. My money is on Bernie to be our next president. I increasingly sense that we are in one of those moments in history where the seemingly impossible become possible then likely then actual. My dream matchup would be Sanders v Trump. Oh how much fun that would be to stomp the worst of modern conservatism with the best of traditional liberalism. A true sea change is at hand. An end to, what, at least three decades of conservative corruption of the American psyche and a return to our better selves.
A man can dream, yes?
Holy shit, a piece about Senator Sanders. I was beginning to think that the Senator would have to call Miley Cyrus or insult HRC’s appearance before he received any coverage here again.
Bernie Sanders has been addressing the concerns of ordinary Americans, many of whom live from month to month and who would like to see a government not just for the rich but for them.
Bernie is growing stronger while Hillary is wilting like a week old cut flower. Her campaign looks as clueless as the 2008 Hillary in the face of Barack Obama. If she wants to be President she has to start acting like she wants it.
factoring in the almost total media blackout in coverage of sanders, it’s remarkable that he’s polling at all. the nyt piece today about team b is beyond infuriating.
I’m happy about this as a Bernie supporter.
It’s still only one poll in IA, and still within margin, so there is still work to do.
This shows mostly that it is an actual race. All of the dismissive comments that there is “no chance” Bernie gets the nomination, are proving to be less than accurate. It also shows that his appeal goes beyond a neighboring state.
He hasn’t won yet, but I urge Hillary supporters to take him more seriously if they want to win and Bernie supporters to not get too cocky…
Let’s all agree to not trash the other candidate, you may end up voting for them in Nov. '16
Edit: to be consistent, I’ll acknowledge that it’s a Q-pac poll, and they have been pretty wacky with the party weighting this year in General election polls. I suppose that would be less of a factor here, but I’ve been pretty critical of them, and shouldn’t just agree because I like the result of this poll.
In July Quinnipiac found Clinton leading Sanders by 19 points.
Does anybody know if Joe Biden was included in the July polling?
Agree totally… 100%
but to be fair, she has a balance to maintain because, I would agree with some of her supporters that the media is happy to trash her when they feel they can get away with it.
Managing this can provide bad optics, it’s a problem for her, and a tough one at that. However, it’s a problem that will only be worse in the General, so she must find a way to deal with it.
Unfair? sure. but universal name recognition cuts both ways.
Baloney. She wants to be President as fervently as any other candidate, and probably more than the vast majority of them.
Desire is not her problem. Her problems are two-fold: 1) A mass media—left, right, and center—that is extremely hostile to her and is happy to enable the constant stream of lies and horseshit that the GOP throws at her; and 2) She’s not a particularly compelling politician to many people, and her innate, intuitive retail political skills are lacking. If she was a new entrant into American public life that might not be a big deal, but she’s been so well-known for so long that she’s an old shoe. By comparison, even though his political career is far longer than Clinton’s, Sanders seems like a fresh new face.
I don’t. But I’mnot sure the finer details are the story. Its the relative movement. I’m not sure I’m ready to believe he is yet ahead. I think it only proves there is a real race. This will hopefully bring free media coverage of the democratic primary instead of just the clown show.
Well, as an independent voter, I’d need to do careful analysis of their position papers in order to choose between them. /s
I think your point #1 is slightly overstated(only slightly) and some (not all) of that is “attack the front-runner” and less about her specifically.
But you point #2 is spot on. And can be summed up as “her biggest strengths are also her weaknesses”
I think the real competition can actually help her with both issues. It will also need up her campaigning which is lacking and needs improvement before the General(should she win)
So Bernie and Hillary fans should be happy with how this is playing out.
Quit making excuses. Bitching about the mass media is a cop out. She hasn’t given anybody any reason to focus on her in a positive way. The mass media is creating its own “news” off her name because she is letting them. In 2008 once it was too late Hillary woke up and took charge of her own campaign. When she did she was a terrific campaigner. Right now her old timey campaign staff is planning when and how she should be “spontaneous.” That is bullshit. She should fire about 1/2 of her staff and run her campaign hands on.
This is the normal ebb and flow of a long primary season. Hillary will be the next president.
