As a private attorney Barr generated a comfortable income in excess of $1M
annually. He gave this up for a ~$250K salary. His reputation is in
shatters, and he runs the very real risk of facing impeachment and
worse.
Likely he didn’t see this coming and thought that he would end up being even richer after protecting the Fat Boy. No one mentioned Alberto Gonzales to him.
OK, so here’s the real story from reading between the lines - Barr gets confirmed and grabs the stick from Whitaker. His first job is to talk to Mueller, (March 5th). He tells Mueller to wrap things up, the King is unhappy. Mueller says I can’t because the Obstruction evidence is so overwhelming I can’t “exonerate” Trump. Barr gets pissed and says you HAVE to make a declination decision on Obstruction because Trump can’t be indicted. Mueller says, “I’d rather not.” Barr says write a report and deliver it by Friday, Mar. 22nd. Mueller delivers the report. Barr expresses disappointment that Mueller couldn’t make a declination decision on Obstruction, when he really meant he was pissed that Mueller did not exonerate Trump.
Bronze Star Soldier Mueller delivers his report as directed. Barr doesn’t like it and issues his own report, WITHOUT EVER LOOKING AT THE EVIDENCE. Mueller immediately calls him out on his false conclusions. (Note: it is IMPOSSIBLE to conclude there was no conspiracy when the investigation was obstructed by the main perpetrator of said conspiracy).
The public FINALLY finds out the Mueller did NOT intend to exonerate Trump on ANYTHING on May 1st - two MONTHS after Barr tells Mueller to break the pencils. On Mayday, (a Russian Holiday), we enter a new phase where the cover-up turns into a stonewall rope-a-dope strategy. 2020 here we come.
Yes. Gonzo. Barr is actually worse than Gonzo. Barr comes across as infinitely more venal, stupid and corrupt than Alberto Gonzales, who was a hapless fool and hopeless political hack. I never dreamed anyone could outdo Gonzo. I was wrong.
I think Barr’s career arc after this will parallel that of Starr, being asked to resign for various unforced errors. As to Mueller, he went as far in his language as he could following the OWHC guideline that a sitting prez cannot be indicted. Barr was pissed that Mueller was precise enough in his language that he managed to communicate not only the charge but the outcome from any future trial, whether it be in a court or in the Senate following an impeachment.
