Discussion: AP: Sanders Running for Prez

Bet you three said that about Ralph Nader.

Yes, they really do hate Hillary enough. And it should be apparent that it is hubris motivating him. He knows he won’t win, but it should make Republicans root for him.

I don’t think Bernie has much of a chance of winning the primary, for all the reasons we all already know (the money people won’t support him, the party leaders are all pretty much locked down for Clinton and have been for years, the media will marginalize him, etc., etc). But here is my question for the TPM commentariat – if somehow he DID win the primary, do you think he could win the general against some or any of the Republican candidates? I think he might actually have a pretty decent chance, especially against a hollow log like Rand Paul, a buffoon like Rick Perry, or a clever but slimy and just not likeable character like Ted Cruz. Yeah, I know, almost certainly not going to happen – but if somehow it did… boy would that be something to watch!

I’m not arguing that HRC should not run.

I am not arguing that HRC is unfit to be President.

I am arguing that HRC should not be the only plausible candidate running.

The odds that she has a major health event are a LOT higher than the 2.2% risk of death. My own parents, who are roughly the same age, are still alive. But they have already suffered maladies that would take anyone out of a Presidential race: heart attack, stroke, cancer.

This is, precisely, why we the Constitution specifies that we have a Vice President and an order of succession. Shit happens, and if you want to run a country you need a backup plan.

What is the Democratic Party’s backup plan for the 2016 election? Bill?

I was simply replying to another commenter’s (liberal) apparent concern over Clinton’s health at age 69. I pointed out that Sanders is 73. If Sanders can run for the presidency at 73 (he’ll be 75 in late 2016), I don’t see any reason Hillary’s age should be a deterrent.

Sorry, just not a Stalinist here. United fronts have serious drawbacks. Nader’s people registered a lot of dems the dems couldn’t be bothered to talk to, and even so Gore couldn’t win. It certainly wasn’t Nader’s fault, and the idea that it was is simply pernicious. That’s just pecking order bs – the abusee passing the violence on down, and as such, it’'s subhuman and pathetic.

More like Ralph Nader in Gore vs Bush and all of Nader’s other exploits.

Sanders is a great guy, but he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell and he will just give ammunition to the Hillary haters. If Demos don’t get fully behind Hillary, we are going to have a motherf@#$in’ Republican president. Hillary isn’t perfect, but she’s a helluva lot better than Walker or Bush.

Right, let’s just make it a coronation.

Right, because no one who’s actually been tested in a primary has ever been elected President of the United States.

They’re both older than a first-term president should be. But apparently we can’t have nice things.

Democrats are DELUSIONAL.

Glad to have his voice in the debate!

Only if he runs against the nominee in the general, genius.

Of course there should be as many Democrats join the debate and seek the nomination as want to do that. But there seems to be this unfounded fear around HRC’s health. She suffered a concussion which briefly affected her sight, she’s past that, and if something has arisen or if she’s afflicted with something it hasn’t yet been revealed. Does turning 69 mean she’ll die soon afterward? That’s what it sounds like people are thinking, but the right wing media will act they always have. In this case, substitute hatred for The Black Man for hatred of The White Woman

He’s said already, repeatedly: if he decided to run, it would be for the DNC nomination, he didn’t have “any illusions” about his chances, his purpose in running would be to use his campaign to raise issues and affect the DNC platform, and he definitely <<<<<< would not follow up losing the DNC nod with a third party candidacy.

When a guy who’s always kept his word in politics for decades says things like that, you can take them to the ban- uhm, to a federally insured safety deposit box.

I’m not convinced you know anything at all about Bernie Sanders’ political history, his policy positions, what he stands for, his integrity, and the soundness of his thinking.

Bone up, PB.

You do know that Bernie Sanders is 73, right? Not much of a back up in the age department there.

Careful not to hit yourself in the head with that jerking knee!

Alright! Move over HRC. I believe there is a seat for you just to the left.
