More to come, I bet. As long as he stays in the race.
Can you imagine what theyâd say if Obama suggested Saudi Arabia has some good ideas when it comes to criminal justice?
Maybe just stab a couple fingers, or hammer on the tip of one.
I agree with that, but the number of such scholarships he has handed out - 6700 by an account that I have read - is quite notable, and he definitely deserves some kudos for that.
It is also remarkable that a neurosurgeon has so much wealth that he can dole out $7M. I have known a lot of physicians and all of them are quite wealthy by any standards, but none are so rich. He must also be given some credit for amassing so much money.
."And the Beat-down Goes On

Itâs like the rich housewife getting caught shoplifting. Itâs not about the money, itâs about the mindset.
Where is Ken Starr when you need him.
Carsonâs support seems to be of two groupsâŚthe âtrue believerâ, evangelical votersâŚand those will break to Santorum, Huckabee and CruzâŚhow that break down works I would not want to venture a guess.
The rest of his support are people who think he is a genuine, nice guy. These people are going to be the first to peel off of Carsonâs campaign, and their support could literally go to almost anyone.
So while Cruz appears to be the most likely candidate to receive Carsonâs supporters, its probably not going to be that big of a bump when/if Carsonâs campaign finally implodes.
That being said, I am not convinced this story will be the straw that breaks the camelâs back. To his supporters this plays out as âCarson is a good man who stood by his friends. And his friend was wrongly accused and persecuted by that evil liberal, secular government for hanging around with such wonderful people like Carsonâ.
A cumulative effect may start to erode his numbers a bit, but this is not the sort of thing that destroys a campaign. Not even close.
Itâs that damned Liberal Media again!
I had the same thought. I have a senior in high school, and a $1000 might pay for books. It wouldnât touch tuition. What is the point of giving such a low amount? It is really of no practical use for someone who otherwise canât afford college.
saying those convicted of health care fraud should go to prison for at least a decade and be forced to forfeit âall of oneâs personal possessions.â
Itâs only fun when the Democrats go to jail.
On a related note, I remember President Obama being raked over the fucking coals for months on end because of his prior association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright⌠whoâs main concerns are equal rights and justice. Hereâs Benny Boy sleeping with a convicted fraud and the media is taking a go-slow approach. Yeah, Ben just canât catch a break with the media.
Though Costa was assigned to serve his sentence in his 8,300-square-foot mansion âŚ
Somebody please sentence me to a year in a 8,300-square-foot mansion. I wonât mind.
I shook my head at that, too. A $1000 scholarship makes precisely no difference to a student eligible for more than $1000 in financial aid from the college, because the $1000 will just be subtracted from what the school provides. It also means that the overhead per scholarship will be ridiculously high.
The web site states that a school can generally nominate only a single student, and that it is up to the school to determine who they select. The charity itself does not consider need when awarding scholarships.
Then there is this piffle: Scholar Recognition Package - Carson Scholars Fund
Donate $500 to pay for a âScholar Recognition Packageâ, and this happens:
Each year a previous Carson Scholar is able to apply for recognition. Recognition inspires confidence, reassures scholars that they are doing the right thing, and helps to build leadership skills.
Your donation ensures that a Recognized Carson Scholar can attend a banquet; receives a medal, pin, and trophy/nameplate; and continues on the path to future academic and career success.
More overhead, more branding.
The inestimable Charlie Pierce:
The attraction of a brilliant neurosurgeon to the dingier precincts of
his professionâthis guy, Mannatechâis one of the more curious things
about him. There are two possible reasons for this, and I think theyâre
both true. The first is that there is something dangerously messianic to
his personality that enables him to justify everything he does,
including consorting with con-men and thieves, because heâs the one
doing the consorting, and whatever he does is justified through his
brilliance, his biography, and/or his close personal relationship with
certain Nazarene carpenters. The second is that he cannot see the flaws
of anyone who sees the world the way he does. Make the right
mouth-noises about âvaluesâ and the Bible, and you can be dismembering
your grandmother in the backyard with a circular saw, and Dr. Ben will
sit down and chat over economic policy with you. Neither of these is a
trait we ought to encourage in our public officials.
Exactly that.
I agree with your sentiment, but as a someone who worked my way through college, every $1,000 scholarship I received was the difference between eating rice or rice with some protein as my daily meal. As a parent facing my own two kids going through college in the next few years, yeah, that $1,000 is absolute chump change.
Then again, that $1,000 scholarship I received is now only worth about $250 in present value.
Just like Cain was not brought down by one incident the cumulative effect did the job. The longer it takes for Carson to flame out the worse it is for the GOP. The evangelical cabal is so easily grifted and so obstinate they continue to be taken to the cleaners and made fools of in the glare of the national stage. If they are stung by Carson (if they ever admit he isnât what they believed him to be) they will be extra leery of Cruz. We shall see.
But many people donât. In fact, if you didnât mention that Bettis was a football player I would have had to search the name.
Anyway, failing to caption photos is one of the things that sucks about TPM.
Most schools that provide a financial aid package will first calculate the amount of aid they will offer, based on their resources and their calculation of your need, without consideration of any scholarships you might have. Once the amount of the package is determined, your scholarships are treated as a source of funds for that aid. So, if your aid package is $12,000 for the year and you have a Carson scholarship, the school gives you an aid package of $12,000 that is paid for by the Carson scholarship and $11,000 from other funds.
Carson was/is a serious wrench in the Cruz strategy. Cruz was probably thinking of taking more the approach W. did, just more strident with regards to ideology. Carsonâs ascent however, has given voice to the evangelicals, to the point that Loving Jesus > Shutting down the Government Because. Cruz wants to burn down the world because it doesnât fit his tea party views. The evangelicals want him to burn it down because its ungodly. They want the same thing, but for different reasonsâŚwhich matters when discussing what happens after the fires burn out.
âThis unfair âpolitically correctâ vetting has got to stop. It isnât like I didnât stab someone or something.â
