Allen and other probate judges in the state cite Alabama Code section 30-1-9, which says marriage licenses “may” be issued by them — not that they must issue them.
Once again, lets get rid of the marriage “license”, lets take the power to deny a right away from these people.

It seems to me that the key here is the understanding that Clerks are able to “grant” marriage licenses, implying that individuals need their permission to get married. The clerk at the DMV does not grant me a license to drive. He “issues” me a license if I meet the state’s requirements. The city planning office does not “grant” me a license to build. They issue me a license if my project meets the established criteria and I pay the required fees. So, where do these people assume that any of us is asking their permission to marry someone, gay or straight? It’s none of their business, as long as we meet the qualifications established by law. If they cannot see that, they need to find another line of work.

Once again some of the strays in the South will have to be pushed and pulled into the 21st Century. As a public servant they do not have a right or the privilege to force their religious beliefs onto the public, the very same folks that collectively pay their salaries thru taxes. They all need to be fired.

There’s nothing in any version of the Bible that mentions lesbians at all. If a clerk refuses to issue a license to two women, they’re not “following God.” They’re simply making shit up.

The intimate private lives of perfect strangers are none of this person’s business. The extent America had allowed busy-bodies to rule the day is evident in these last hold outs.
There is nothing at all christian about this person’s faith. It’s just fascism wanting the Get Out Of Secular Life Free card simply and only because “I believe.”

The office of Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway encouraged any couples who are turned away to seek private counsel.
The state of Kentucky should bring the lawsuits. And these taxpayer-salaried “public servants” should either do their jobs or find new ones.

If the state officials cannot do their jobs or refuse to based on their beliefs then the full weight of the law needs to be used to compel them or remove them from office. They cannot deny Constitutional rights based on what they feel or believe. They can start the process by removing this judge from office.

This is the core of the issue. From John Roberts to Kim Davis these people seem to think that their opinion on other people’s marriage is wanted or relevant. It’s not.
