Discussion: 'American In The Royal Family!': Prince Harry, Markle Wed In Worldwide Fanfare

“Harry kept his full red beard intact.”

Leave Harry’s beard alone. Let him cover whatever he wants with hair while he still has the option.

Bishop Michael gave a sermon the likes of which has never been seen at a royal wedding. Pure revival meeting. It was great.

It was a message to be heard and to be implemented!

Who cares that you don’t care? Can I see a show of hands?

I’m not much for Royalty, but is was a nice break from our world problems.

I loved it, more than I thought I would. I loved the simplicity of her dress too.

Had our own country not been in such a foul mood with the Divider in Chief in charge of our own national nightmare working the twitter machine on a daily basis, I probably wouldn’t have thought this was such an uplifting event. The pomp and circumstance of this royal marriage was really something…and thankfully, it wasn’t that long a service. I really liked the preacher from America that spoke.

There’s really something to be said for doing things on script and in accordance with tradition…something we haven’t seen in this country since the Orange Menace took office here. Not one thing that’s happened in our own country in the last year and a half has been in accordance with precedence or any form of true American tradition. So with everything being abnormal here, the time honored traditions in Britain at the very least, is a welcome thing.

 You have no idea how many times I’ve wanted to say that. It’s like saying you hate lima beans. If you don’t like them, don’t eat them and now shut up, OK?

I didn’t much care myself, I hope they’re happy I guess, I imagine they won’t have to worry much about money anyway. Glad nobody wanted Two Scoops there on their big day. Let him stay home and fume about it.

Yaaaawwwwwwnnnnnn… Didn’t we fight two wars so that we wouldn’t have to put up with British Royalty?

He’s been upstaged. Let’s see how long he can hold out before he demands everyone focus on his hate-tweets to get the focus back on himself.

Yawwwwwwn…I don’t recall the Royal Family taking any interest in either of MY weddings.

His last tweet was about beautiful clean coal. I swear if he’s not indicted he’ll end up endlessly replaying his greatest hits on a series of state-fair stages, like Nugent does.

ODG, just let it go. We’re the ones that celebrate celebrity, we’ve raise the celebration of celebrity to what we now have in the WH.

Interestingly, Royals in various countries get married all the time, even those in the immediate royal ascension to power. American TV never shows any of those weddings, just the ones from Britain. Its almost like we have some kind of invisible bond with our former colonizer and dare I say, one of our longest and strongest allies. Otherwise, how else to explain it?

Really, its no mystery why some in America watch this stuff with some awe. Its also a part of our history, one we left behind for good reason, but one we can still appreciate as a touchstone to our own evolution as a country. Sadly though, we are now in de-evolution mode.

Sure, but in those days the British military was the most powerful military in the world, so it actually meant something.

But the significance of this event is not the royal wedding per se, or even the pomp and circumstance surrounding it. What is important here is that the British royal family is willing to welcome not just a divorced American, but a bi-racial woman, into its midst. This shift to inclusivity and acceptance of diversity is an event of considerable sociocultural significance. The wedding itself is secondary.

Besides, there are a lot of people who just can’t stand to see other people happy.

Sadly, although Harry is very close to them, the Obamas couldn’t be invited because of protocol thanks to Spankee (although I think they avoided non-British royalty and other heads of state for similar reasons). Can you imagine the flap if they’d gotten an invite??

Personally, I thought it was tastefully and thoughtfully done — a mix of everything, enough pomp to make it royal, but casual touches like holding hands, as well as the mix of not only transatlantic culture, but black traditions mixed in.

Above all, they both seemed completely at ease and natural. I swear it even looked like he had tears in his eyes around the vows.

It was a nice escape from all the dreariness.

(And wasn’t that cellist fabulous??)

I think you nailed. Pain must have been unbearable, biggest event in years and you had every right to be invited but didn’t because your husband is an @$$hole.
