I think I saw him hanging around the Girl Scout cookie table at the local Pigly Wiggly.
âWe consider it accidental until the investigation takes us elsewhereâ - there is no âaccidentâ, students are prohibited from having guns in school, so the death and injury are a serious gun crime. Jesus, these gun nuts.
My state, Indiana, is one of the states in which the state legislature was advancing gun regulation-loosening legislation prior to the Parkland Atrocity, and in the week after was still advancing it. Currently guns are not allowed inside or on the grounds of any church that also houses a school. It is widely believed that this would be used as a lever to next push for removing schools as âgun free zonesâ (aside from school police âsafetyâ officers).
Strong push back from, I believe, across the state in the wave of attention led by the Parkland students - and someone at the statehouse yesterday said that the legislation is dead. The legislative session ends March 14. No press verification that isnât speculative and from last week - so I canât say this definitively. But I am pretty sure that the NRA is seeing some setbacks across the country.
These shootings, whether accidental or intentional, have to stop.

I guess that was to be expected. Children are dying of needless violence, in a way that doesnât happen anywhere else. You go defending that as an acceptable price of oneâs so-called âfreedomâ and youâre bound to have setbacks. You have to give them credit because a sane society would have dealt with this long ago. All the others have already.

The two students werenât officially identified, but Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said young woman killed was a senior, about to turn 18 and had been accepted at college, with âaspirations and dreams to be a nurse.â
âWe are not just talking about some person, weâre talking about losing a part of our future. Our hearts are heavy,â the mayor said.
The chief said he had not been told of any kind of argument, fight or struggle that preceded the shooting, which also wounded a 17-year-old junior on the football team, al.com reported.
âWeâre not saying he shot her, weâre not saying he didnât shoot her,â the chief said. âWeâre asking those questions ourselves so we can determine exactly what happened.â
Iâm thinking it was a murder-suicide. And the suicide wasnât successful.
Someone is shot dead and the police think it may have been an accident? Sounds like the Mayor and/or Police Chief are protecting the shooter for some reason. For sure, it wouldnât have been considered an accident if a knife had been involved. These Southern States are twisting themselves into a pretzel trying to defend guns in schools.
How is any of that an accident?

No matter what happened, it was obviously no accident.
There is some reporting that the kid was showing off the gun when the girl was shot, and then he was shot in the leg when he was putting the gun in his backpack. I am not sure if this is true or not, but it is a slightly different issue than the mass shootings ( in schools or elsewhere). Guns are deadly and humans are imperfect. Mix the two and there will be some very unfortunate consequences. I look at a lot of 1800s and early 1900s newspapers for my genealogical research and it is pretty surprising how many gun deaths there are, even in areas with small populations. Lots of accidents, where somebody tripped on something, and their gun discharged as they fell. Plus suicides and intentional killings during arguments. Guns are effing deadly, even in the hands of people who were raised with their proper care and use. It is sheer folly to think that putting more guns into the hands of more humans is a sane solution to our mass murder problem.
If it was accidental, that just makes gun control measures and the throttling of gun culture that much more obviously a good idea. No reason for a gun to have been in school, and no reason for teens to have been playing with one. (And so much for the idea of security measures, since the gun obviously made it into school and got used without any good guys stopping it. The only answer is fewer random guns around.)
Obviously it is in our genes as Americans, you know, New World Wilderness, Redcoats, Daniel Boon and Bars, Indians, Buffalo, Outlaws of the Wild West, High Schools. We were all weaned on guns and violence and the pursuit of our very own unarticulated happiness.

This is, btw, yet another reason why the current leadership of the NRA deserves to burn in hell for eternity. They used to be serious about teaching gun safety and encouraging a culture of not being stupid with guns. But now they spend their tens of millions of dollars as shills.
Itâs hard to believe that two people were shot âby accidentâ unless they were hit by the same round. One can imagine that someone brought a gun to school for âprotectionâ in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
But itâs easy to imagine a gun discharging accidentally. Presumably, there is some probability of a loaded gun discharging accidentally every time it is handled. I donât know what that probability is, but letâs say, arguendo, that itâs âone in a millionâ, which is sort of a generic statement of high odds. Now there are over 300 million guns in the US, but presumably not all of them are handled every day while loaded. Between those that arenât handled and those that are handled more than once a day, letâs say, again arguendo, that a third of the total number of guns are handled every day. That means there are 100 million handlings of loaded guns every day. If the odds of an accidental discharge are one in a million, that means that there will be 100 accidental discharges every day. Whether anyone is killed or injured depends simply on where the gun is pointed when it goes off.
Now you can play around with the numbers and arrive at different results for the number of accidental discharges per day, but the point is one in a schoolroom is too many. Thatâs why there should be no guns in schools. If there are no guns, they canât accidentally discharge.
