Discussion for article #229234
How many of these state officials are facing re-election? Just sayin’.
Spot on! Most, aside from their own depraved and cankerous natures, are using the issue to shore up their low/no information, TEAlibangelical Rightard sheeple “base”!
Why is it that these far-right reactionary radicals—who claim to venerate the US Constitution—are so quick to dismiss legally-binding Appeals court decisions with which they disagree?
I cannot think of a more un-American, anti-American, unconstitutional behavior pattern.
And what is it in the “conservative mind” that makes them crave the ability to deny other Americans their Constitutional rights----marriage, voting, and so on?
We can only conclude that these people care nothing about the Constitution, or civil rights, or anything else outside of their right-wing bubble, which bears no resemblance to the real world that the rest of live in.
Go, Sam Brownback. You’ve done a spectacular job making Kansas FUBAR, might as well go all in.
Officials up for re-election in other states (e.g., Scott Walker) have dropped the issue though.
WHY dOEs LIbtards Want TO gaY the NAtion? why Get MArrIED if YOU can’T maKE BAbieS? liBTARDS IS so STUPiD!!11!1!!one!!11!!!
Just another indication that we as a nation are insane. Climate Change is coming on us like a hammer on a nail and we are debating and arguing about gay marriage. Our infrastructure is crumbling and we are arguing about gay marriage. Wall Street is about to crash the economy with the help of the Feds and we are arguing about gay marriage. We truly are insane. 50% of our straight marriages end in divorce. Single mom everywhere. 60% of second marriages end in divorce. It’s like a big cosmic joke.
“John Eastman, chairman of the anti-gay marriage National Organization for Marriage, … urged state officials to continue to put up a legal fight until the Supreme Court decides the issue one way or the other. ‘Until the Supreme Court decides it, this remains a viable option,’ Eastman said.”
Eastman is saying that contempt of court is a viable legal option. Jailing state officials who are in contempt of court is also a viable legal option and it is one that is much more likely in this case.
And by the way, unless and until there is a circuit split, there is no reason to believe that the SupCt is going to take this issue up. And moreover, the Court has already shown their hand on this issue. If the conservative wing had the votes to stop it, they would have never let the rulings in the 10th Circuit and elsewhere stand. The votes to turn back the clock on marriage equality do not exist in the SupCt, which is really something that marriage equality opponents should reconcile themselves to.
Good luck with that losing strategy!
Some reactionary Republican politicians, including members of the Supremes, want to again stymie America with another pointless cultural fight, a fight they see, thanks to SCOTUS interference in the political system, as their only chance to blanket America with hate-filled propaganda, further disrupt the social order and recover the White House in 2016 from the smoking wreckage.
It’s mourning in America.
These governors do not believe in liberty and justice for all. In their minds, liberty is the ability to deny constitutional rights to others who are different from themselves. Justice is the act of prosecuting those who violate their religious beliefs. Welcome to the Christian State. ISIL is busy taking notes on the actions and justifications of these governors. In my mind, their simply two sides of the same coin.
Criminals!
I say skip these shows trials, as the District Appeals Courts have already ruled, AS HAS the US Supreme Court by refusing to take the case!
Time to call in the National Guard to arrest those breaking the laws. I’d say those couples affected should immediately file civil suits against those governors and attorneys general for denial of civil rights, Make them personally liable and squeeze them for every dollar!
I really hate the equation of gay marriage and same sex marriage. Bi people exist. Gay people marry opposite sex partners. Straight people have almost certainly married same sex partners by now.
That’s why the proper term is “marriage equality.” We should all use it whenever we discuss this issue.
But The Supreme Court DID decide. It decided the lower courts were correct and refused to hear the case. End of story.
This is just naked political posturing a week before an election.
Well, two of the three strongly conservative circuits have yet to rule, so there’s still the possibility of a split. But one of them did, and ruled in favor of equality, so it’s by no means guaranteed.
“…Until the Supreme Court decides it, this remains a viable option…”
See?
Republicans really have no use for state’s rights. It’s just a carrot the Party dangles in front of southern segregationists to make them think they and the Republicans are compadres.
Hey, South! Come back home to the Democratic Party. You’ll be so much wealthier, not having to depend on the government welfare Republican Congresses keeps budgeting your way while whining about how much there is.
I tell you that man’s face sends a shudder into one’s soul.
2004’s hate filled election redux. The GOP has to get out their low info voters and what better way than to play off of hate for “the gay”.
Got to protect marriage from Democrats, elect Republicans! Abortion isn’t drawing out the knuckle draggers like it used to, so whip up their hatred of gay people. Worked to get their little Tea Party up and running, what could possibly go wrong?
