DeSantis: Defund Universities That Promote ‘Indoctrination’ | Talking Points Memo

“the usual cast of conservative non-profits mobilizing around the country to draft laws at the state level that would ban the ideas from being taught, and to encourage parents to raise the boogeyman at local school board meetings.”

Because we can’t allow our intitutions of higher education to become

“intellectually repressive environments (where) You have orthodoxies that are promoted and other viewpoints are shunned or even suppressed.”

Added: Besides, the State of Florida defunded their public universities long ago. They depend on football, donors, and ridiculously high tuition and fees.

What about religious colleges that receive state funding? Those do a lot of indoctrination!

Well, that just blew my bubble. Here I was thinking this great; start with all the Catholic schools and universities and then move on to all those Sunday bible schools.

As I read this, DeSantis wants “affirmative action” for right wing idiots, assholes and propaganda. Kind of like teaching “intelligent design” (bible creationism) as equal to evolution.

From the article:
DeSantis, a bombastic Trump supporter up for re-election next year, made the remarks after signing a law that will force state-funded universities and colleges to poll their faculty, students, and staff for “intellectual diversity,” That survey, the paper reported, will focus on “the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented.”

As I read this DeSantis is saying universities have to admit idiots, people who believe in the big lie for example. What about people, like many White Evangelicals, who believe that Blacks have “the Mark of Kane”. Would universities be required to include in its student body this idea held by a substantial number of White Evangelicals?

I mean this is literally affirmative action for idiots.

I thought it was inevitable because all of his voters were cousins of the banjo player.

DeSantis is making his push to help increase enrollment at Pensacola Christian college and Liberty and Bob Jones universities.

Neo-liberalism got us pro-corporate deregulation, welfare “reform,” and deficit scolding. Whoever promoted it deserves scorn.

The irony is that the target audience is the same one that believes school prayers should be mandatory and the ten commandment should be prominently displayed in public buildings and schools.

West Point? Hell if you want serious indoctrination you can’t beat the Air Force Academy.

Or George Mason University. Good school, but the Koch Brothers help fund the law and economics departments.

Florida state colleges and universities that show signs of “indoctrination” may be defunded, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said on Tuesday, as he and others on the right crusade against what conservatives have decided to call “Critical Race Theory.”

So, teaching US History is forbidden?

Jesus, what a whining coward. Look, dude, what you want to do is abolish the Humanities: own it. All this precious prancing around, all that posturing and preening, and for what? A few declarations against CRT?

C’mon, you’re never going to be President with wussy policies like that. It’s all pretty straightforward, so I don’t understand the hesitation. First, abolish tenure. Second, give the universities the necessary funds to buy out every single tenured professor in the humanities (there aren’t actually very many, so it won’t be as expensive as you might think.) Third, shut down the Humanities and Social Sciences–except for the America is the Greatest Country in the World! history classes, of course.

Sure, the universities will protest, and the blowback might frighten you, so remember this: universities are administrations with a football team. Quietly promise that extra funds will be available to hire more administration and I think you’ll find that the protests quickly become pro forma.

And now here’s that One Weird Trick that will transform everything: you replace all those hotbeds of commiefascistgayness with–wait for it!–the trades. That’s the secret sauce to this whole operation. You’re just being a good manager of the state’s money, ensuring that Floridian students will be able to get jobs and set up small businesses! We don’t need language majors or anthropologists in Florida, you will declare, but we do need welders and electricians!

By god, Americans everywhere will just lap that shit up! Really lean in hard on our native anti-intellectualism and, before you know it, you will be the Idol of the Party!

You’re welcome.
