New York’s highest court said Wednesday that congressional and state Senate maps drawn by Democrats were unconstitutional, ruling that the maps violated procedural and substantive rules against gerrymandering.
though, due to Republicans’ delay tactics and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, respectively, voters in the latter two states will still vote in gerrymandered districts this year.
Zombie Fourth Estate: “Dems in disarray…looking like an even worse shellacking in the mid-terms now that they have to stop trying to steal elections from the Republicans in New York.”
Stupid decision by the NY courts here, but Dems will end up with a solid net gain out of NY when all is said and done. The special master who has been appointed is the same guy who did the recently approved PA maps, so given population changes and the partisan impact of those changes, Dems will gain seats. I still think the NY Leg should sue in Fed Court to troll the SCOTUS and apply the Purcell principle fairly to the Dems’ benefit here.
Our country desperately needs external oversight when it comes to districting, because the process as-is clearly gets abused by both sides (a rare true both sides!) Of course, the problem is finding who to trust with such a task on a national scale, and I got nothin. NY’s solution only works because the judges involved aren’t fascist enablers.
Wasserman is being dense here. The special master is going to draw a good map where the Dems will have net gains. It will probably be a +4 vs the +7 of the Hochulmander. Well, Dems are also getting a seat back in NH and one in KS so it’s pretty close to a wash there.
