No. He’s more popular with Republican voters than any of their congressmen. If they turn against Trump, their base will turn against them. They are all in and will remain so unless Trump somehow becomes unpopular with the redhats.
An economic crash could damage his popularity with the base, although how that shakes out politically in any direction is very unpredictable. That could just as easily radicalize their base even more behind an even more radical and ideological leader (spoiler: it’s Tom Cotton). Desperate, angry people make desperate, angry decisions, particularly when there’s a massively powerful propaganda network pushing them in certain desperate, angry directions.
What makes you think all this stuff goes away with a senate acquittal?
Shit, by late spring we should finally have folks like mcgahn dragged in, Neal will finally have some tax returns, and a few of the other cases should be wrapping up.
Nothing will be forgotten, and the russia thing will continue to be a focus all the way to the election.
If the Republicans do, in fact, vote in almost unanimous lock-step to protect Trump, and then more damning information comes out about his corruption in the continuing investigations - and it will - the rest of the Republican brand is damaged almost as much or more than Trump before the elections.
Sadly he won’t, IMO. The Republican Party has been re-created in Donalds image. That aberration isn’t going anywhere. I have sadly concluded that the Republican Party is no longer a party with an ideology that I strongly disagree with, I now believe they are an active threat to our country.
Mostly playing devil’s advocate, but Clinton’s impeachment was a big fat failure. Clinton wasn’t removed, he actually gained popularity, and Democrats gained seats in Congress in the next election cycle. (And Al Gore won that damn election.)
Point being, comparing this to the Clinton impeachment is not a good look.
Ah, good. Now that both george and paul have weighed in just how horrible and weak this move is, we can now state with 100% certainty that it’s exactly the right move at the right time.
Not sure if I agree. It is those who have issues with shoelaces that are more open to conspiracy theory. I know some of these folks, like the believers that the moon landing was only on a sound stage in LA. Trust me, Deep State is a concept that allows them to continue to believe the unbelievable.
Because impeachment isn’t the only thing we do. Schedules must be kept, bills must be passed, and policies must be developed. Anything less is the Republican way.
My current imaginary money bet is that Trump won’t be removed from office. Too many of the R’s in the Senate are in safe districts. A vote to acquit means they keep their seats, and that’s all they care about.
The more vulnerable Senate R’s up for reelection in 2020 would need to make a calculation that enough moderates would vote for them to balance the loss of the Trump base. Because the base would be furious if they voted to convict. I don’t think enough Senate R’s would take that risk. And I’m positive none of them have the guts to convict just on principle.
I get that, mostly, but the real audience (target) as you say is the voters and the 2020 election. Letting Moscow Mitch have his way with this now, and Chump crowing about how he stepped on D necks and their puny Impeachment for 11 months isn’t the 2020 message we need. My opinion, and my read on how this will play in the media for all of 2020 and the electorate mindscape. We were playing small-ball before Impeachment, and will go back to that or worse with it wrapped up and Moscow Mitch sitting on it.
