Democrats Assess The Wreckage After Nationwide Collapse

Originally published at: Democrats Assess The Wreckage After Nationwide Collapse - TPM – Talking Points Memo

Donald Trump was resoundingly voted back into the White House after running a sloppy campaign centered on lamenting the economy and anti-trans and anti-immigrant rhetoric. A country-wide rightwing shift also helped deliver Republicans the Senate, though they were always favored by the map. The races in some key swing states have yet to be called,…

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that “abortion rights were a big winner” given that all state-level abortion laws are vulnerable to federal meddling – meddling which has now become much more likely.

I have been thinking about Trump’s call for tariffs. People in the red states must think they are a way to visit pain on affluent Democrats.

Well, I think the ongoing disagreement on this site between two vocal camps about whether or not Trump would eventually face consequences for his crimes has been settled. He has now gotten away with everything he has done in the past, and he will get away with everything he has yet to do. The argument about when he would hand over the Trump Tower keys seems quaint now. I think I’ll just cancel my subscription to TPM and move on with my life as disconnected from US politics as possible. Sanctimonious Coward, out.

Just burn this country down to the ground. It’s beyond saving. There’s no such thing as consequences for crimes if you’re rich.

The world now sees us as a corrupt and idiotic shithole of a nation.

Joe Biden was the only Democratic candidate who could have beaten Trump in 2020. While he generally did a good job as president, he flubbed it on immigration. After title 42 was dropped, he should have then adopted the executive order that he eventually put in place too late five months ago. It was as if Biden was not paying attention to the southern border.

My wife texted me this morning after waking up our 8 yr old son to take him to school (I leave for work before they have to wake up).

"Ian started crying when he found out TCF won the election. He asked through tears, ‘so there won’t be anymore voting?’. "

I fear he called it and I don’t know how to deal with it either.

Unlike Trump, Adolf Hitler was never elected. Neither was Benito Mussolini. Americans should be so proud.

To say this election was a deep disappointment would be the understatement of the century; believe I will be ready to carry on later but need some time to grieve.

Over and out for now, just need to shake the feeling I woke up in 1933 Germany.

I want to say something about how DUMB this is from TPM

Abortion Rights Ran Far Ahead Of Harris Where They Were On Ballot

But first these results should surprise nobody. Like it or not this is the same USA as it was in 2016 when Trump squeaked out an electoral college victory against a White women and in 2020 where he lost a close but not that close race to a White man.

That is it should be no surprise that Trump’s dumpster fire of a campaign defeated a very well run campaign by a Black women and that the defeat went down the ticket.

I mean when the Obama’s had to spend weeks trying to convince Black men to vote let alone not to vote for an openly racist against them candidate, we should not be surprised by this result. That is even worse than being Black, being a woman is far more disqualifying in today’s America and being Black and a woman is why for the first time Trump won the popular vote.

But back to this from TPM:

Abortion Rights Ran Far Ahead Of Harris Where They Were On Ballot

The issue of the election was always; will White women save America from its worst? Noting that women as a group regardless of ethnicity are just as racist, xenophobic and religious bigoted as men, they are just not as misogynistic.

But the question from the moment Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden as the nominee was always will Harris make up the loss of men, mostly White but also significantly Black and other men of color, from White women.

The problem was, what putting an access to abortion measure on the ballot did was allow White women to keep their racism, xenophobia and religious bigotry while at the same time opposing misogyny.

That is by putting abortion access on the ballot while running a Black woman against a racist xenophobic religious bigot allowed White woman to save or otherwise vote for themselves while still supporting the worst of themselves and America.

The election was close enough to point to many single things that had they of been different would have effected the result. But we are really foolish if we do not accept the most obvious answer is that the result is that America will not elect a woman let alone a progressive Black woman as president even when the other choice is a pile of dung.

I am looking, so far with little success, for any clues as to WTF happened to Dem turnout here. Joe got 81 million votes four years ago. This part simply isn’t making sense to me yet.

I think you give them too much credit. Tariffs were touted as punishment against foreign countries (Formerly known as trading partners). Taxpayers will foot the bill. The people in red states will only notice if/when the subsidies don’t come in.

Missourian here. While I am heartened that the voters in my state have passed the amendment to restore abortion rights, I have no doubts that the state republican trifecta have a plan to dismantle the will of the voters. Those Missouri women who voted to restore their rights but failed to vote for democrat leaders should have just stayed home.

You are assuming they are ignorant. It is entirely probable they just don’t believe us.

They also voted for an increase in the minimum wage. Let’s see if the Republican legislature and governor let that happen.

My own view is the Democratic party needs to imbed some folks in Missouri to help elect state legislators and senators in the long run.
