Reps. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), the only two female Democratic veterans in the House, expressed shock Friday that the vast majority of House Republican “moderates” voted for a bundle of far-right amendments on the defense bill the evening before.
why did everyone but two people in the Republican conference vote for this really bad amendment?”
Because Evangelical Christians are on a mission from god. The American taliban has to impose its will on all Americans especially female Americans. The miscogny it burns.
Absolutely the GOP is controlled by far (far, far far…political cult-like) right wing extremists. GOP politicians don’t support the extremists only if it might actually cost them the election. And sometimes not even then, because primaries come before the general election, so they might even risk a general election loss to know they will pass the primary to the general.
“That was shocking to me,” she continued. “I did not anticipate that — that did surprise me, especially given what I was hearing from members across the aisle who I thought would vote against that amendment.”
Not believing ANYTHING the right says cannot be stressed enough. We’ve seen that in the judicial confirmation process that they will say whatever is convenient and furthers their goals. Truth or not.
No, they are correct to use that construction. As elected members of Congress, they have to temper and encode their speech; even more because they are Dem women. I suspect they will be doing some ass kicking in chambers.
The problem with saying they are "shocked: is that it makes them look hopelessly naive and unfit for positions of power. To be fair to these women, plenty of Democratic men in Congress say they are “shocked” at GOP actions.
Democrats need a better set of words when Republicans do what Republicans do. How about, “disappointed but not surprised.”
How can anyone be “shocked” by this at this point? That anyone is “shocked” by this really makes me question how attached to reality these Democrats are.
It was only ever about taking it from Democrats. They didn’t actually intend to do anything meaningful with it.
It’s the same as the bully who takes another kid’s toy and proudly displays it as their own, daring the owner to do something about it only to abandon it when they are bored with carrying it.
After the 2024 election Republicans will be all over the media bragging about how they “wanted” to give the House back to Dems and that they taught them a valuable lesson, got what they wanted out of it.
We have to face up to the fact that 25% of this country is privileged psychopaths who only exist to cause pain for the other 75%.
I suppose that NY reps who will most likely be booted next November decided to take the money and run, and I’m sure money came from deep-pocket, religious conservatives.
Excerpt from the story Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) had sharp words for her party on Thursday about its latest divisive move on abortion access – only to wind up voting yes in the end.
“We should not be taking this fucking vote, man. Fuck,” a visibly frustrated Mace was overheard venting to her staff in an elevator, apparently referring to Thursday’s vote to reverse Biden administration policy on reimbursing travel costs for service members seeking abortions. “It’s an asshole move, an asshole amendment.”
Great to see that elected Dems are still clinging to the fantasy of Republican moderates and continue to underestimate the enemy. Should make for resounding electoral victory.
