Rep. Richie Torres (D-NY) forcefully denounced his fellow New York lawmaker, Rep. George Santos (R-NY), in a Tuesday NBC News op-ed, calling him a “danger to our democracy and national security.” And though a handful of Republicans had “the courage to denounce him publicly and demand his overdue resignation,” Torres argued, the resistance from the vast majority of national-level GOP lawmakers is based simply on math: Losing George Santos would mean an even slimmer margin of control in the House.
Santos is going to be the gift that keeps on giving with respect to the Biden docs. The GOP could’ve been hammering this but they keep having to answer Q’s about the Talented Mr. Santos.
And that means, even more sadly, that the media won’t, either. They’ll be all “Joe Biden’s Classified Dox!” and “Hunter Biden’s laptop!”, per the demands of their Republican “influencers.”
Sociopaths all over the country are saying to themselves, “Dang, I gotta run for office as a Republican. They’ll let me do anything as long as I’m loyal to the top line of criminals.”
This. Basically, the fact that the GOP has not openly embraced just about any pathological personality as being okay, our Republic is in for more worlds of hurt.
McCarthy has an extremely casual relation with the truth. Shortly after the J6 Insurrection, McCarthy denounced Trump and his part in it in the Chambers of the House of Representatives. Anyone seeing and hearing this would have been shocked by the about-face shift from those forceful words to sycophancy in the manner of fealty to Donald Trump soon after.
I recall Rachel Maddow’s amazement at this particular shift as she handed the mike over to Lawrence O’Donnell as he began his program.
Her words were almost reminiscent of another Era…one in which when politicians tried to contort the contradictions of prior pronouncements they were, ultimately, held to account.
It was not to be.
For McCarthy, it turned out to be that the speech seen by all might as well not have existed in the first place.
…and this is not some one-off occurrence subject to misinterpretation: that post J6 speech by McCarthy can be accessed by anyone and at any time.
As someone pointed out a few days ago, having no shame is the GOP’s superpower.
One other point about resumes. Saying you supervised 10 people when you only supervised 3 is puffing. Saying you are a brain surgeon when your real job is changing bed pans is lying.
As has been said many times, the overwhelming support by White Evangelicals for Donald “grab her by the …” Trump proves that “values” in front of the word voter is and has always been code for race.
Though I think that’s part of it for some, I can say as someone who grew up among the fundamentalists down South that it’s about far more than that. It’s very much about Christian Nationalism and a desire to accelerate the Rapture. They put up with TFG because of what he could do for them in those areas.
Rs aren’t going to let up on Biden docs. Believe it or not they can do two things at once, 1) ignore the Santos scandal right under their noses and 2) bang on Joe non stop. What they cannot do or choose not to do is work on legislation, federal debit limit and they cannot ignore the crimes of Hunter because they make the right wingnuts salivate.
