De Blasio: ‘Real Death Toll’ Of COVID-19 In NYC Is ‘Even Higher’ Due To Home Deaths

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned on Wednesday that the city’s actual death toll from the COVID-19 outbreak is much higher than official numbers show because many people die from the illness at home rather than the hospital.

You need to go to Jared (NOT)…
He has a plan to make peace with the death statistics…

Someone please tell Kushner that we already have a…

National Syndromic Surveillance Program, a voluntary collaboration between the CDC and various state and local health departments that draws data from more than 4,000 health care facilities.

And that experts say:

“In an emergency, what works best is scaling up existing robust systems, not trying to create a new system,” said former CDC Director Tom Frieden. “Use the systems you have.”

Without universal testing – which we most likely will not have for quite a while now – the only way to tell how many people this is actually killing is going to be year-over-year mortality.

Many stories this morning on how it’s hitting communities of color harder - because they’re poor and have less access to healthcare. I’ve a feeling some R’s are seeing that as a ‘feature’ not a flaw. (Like the Alt Right who wanted to go out and spread it)

But much of the ‘Red’ states communities are also rural and poor. Sooner or later - it’s going to catch up to the core constituency as well. Lots of folks ‘dying at home’ in rural areas.

This is horrible.

EMTs in NYC are noting the number of deaths by ‘heart failure’ - has more than doubled on a daily basis - looking at their case loads. They can see it in real time.

Hydrochloroquin can cause congestive heart failure – one of the reasons sensible doctors are urging caution.

I wonder when FEMA will start home deliveries of HRPs (Human Remains Pouches), also known as body bags?

Seriously? Is this some kind of military speak”?

So glad to hear a political leader admit this.

I was afraid it was going to be suppressed and not acknowledged.

Yes. Or as it was dubbed in one article, “military-industrial-complex-speak”.

The uncounted fraction is likely running at 20% now and will only rise…

Ah, militarized biznobabble.

I would bet the unconfirmed toll is closer to 50% of the confirmed deaths, and maybe more than that. Again, only year-over-year mortality statistics are going to tell the tale.

The Pale-Breasted Kushtwit is gonna be cooking the death statistics like I don’t know what.

Glad to see DeBlasio mention this. NY will start adding to the COVID counts those who died at home from a COVID illness. In NY that would add over 1700 to the fatality count or increase it by 30%. 20%-30% is probably a reasonable estimation of the undercount in fatalities nationwide.

I’m surprised, but not that surprised. Trump’s demented antics and SARS-COV-2 are sucking all the oxygen out of the air. Both Joe and Bernie are being ignored by the press, but Joe has the most votes in the bank, and without media access, Bernie’s uphill climb just got worse.

Just my feeling,I wish the politicians would get out of the way and let the doctors and scientist have the daily amount of time they are getting to give factual messages.

This is what many of us feared as its an indicator of an overwhelmed medical system. People either not seeking treatment for non COVID-19 illness/injury or they are being turned away because the hospitals can’t help them.

According to a study by German researchers, the number of worldwide COVID-19 cases is drastically under reported, overall about 6% of total, with the US and U.K. significantly worse than even that. Without diagnosis, deaths are not reported as being due to the virus.

Excerpt:

To test the quality of official case records, Professor Vollmer and Dr. Bommer analyzed data from a recent study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Their data show that countries have only discovered on average about 6% of coronavirus infections and the true number of infected people worldwide may already have reached several tens of millions.

Insufficient and delayed testing may explain why some European countries, such as Italy and Spain, are experiencing much higher casualty numbers (relative to reported confirmed cases) than Germany, which has detected an estimated 15.6% of infections compared to only 3.5% in Italy or 1.7% in Spain.

Detection rates are even lower in the United States (1.6%) and the United Kingdom (1.2%) — two countries that have received widespread criticism from public health experts for their delayed response to the pandemic… [Emphasis mine]
