Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continued to plod forward through the weekend.
Here are the latest developments:
A Ukrainian soldier walks past the corpses of a family lying on the ground after shelling by the Russian army at the evacuation point of Irpin,
Putin bombing civilians in the “evacuation corridor” he agreed to. There were at least two children killed. This is just like Syria, agree to allow civilians to leave and then kill them when they are in the open.
So far, unlike Assad, he hasn’t used chemical weapons on civilians, but this may be coming.
But McDonalds, Coke, and Pepsi are fine with continuing to operate in Russia. I wonder if those two children had played around a Ronald McDonald statue.
The long-term aim of a lend-lease arrangement would be to create stockpiles of military aid along Ukraine’s borders. Ideally, any time Ukraine would submit a request for support, the necessary materiel would be readily available for transport rather than subject to a lengthy procurement process. The most daunting hurdle to this proposal would likely be the initial stages of passing legislation and coordinating plans with allies. But bureaucracy should not stand in the way of waging an existential fight for democracy. Historically, providing aid to Ukraine has been a strong point of bipartisan cooperation, and majorities in both parties understand the importance of Ukraine’s victory in this war. Therefore, the Biden administration is well positioned to mobilize bipartisan support for a new Lend-Lease Act, much as President Franklin Roosevelt did in 1941 despite isolationist opposition. Doing so could even provide a rallying point for Washington after years of domestic polarization.
Russian forces also continued to shell the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol on Saturday, despite previously agreeing to a ceasefire hours before.
Putin’s word means absolutely nothing, as we’ve been aware all along (especially after living through four years of our own ‘dumb’ Putin).
The U.S. is exploring a deal that would involve Poland sending Soviet-era aircraft to Ukraine in return for American F-16 jet fighters, a move aimed at aiding Ukraine’s response to Russia’s invasion. The deal, which would require White House approval and congressional action
I can’t see putingoopers in congress being able to block this, and truthfully it would only be a relative few of them that would even attempt it.
This is the kind of thing people who are losing a war do.
“It’s over. Ukraine is strategically winning”
General McCaffery
Admiral McRaven agrees as does James Clapper.
But dead people will continue to fall while they were fleeing or sheltering. I weep with the world.
Fat Man speaks:

Evil, lying sonsabitches.
Hope we can help Ukraine stomp this flat, very flat, very soon.
A man with no honor.
This is why sanctions must absolutely stay in place until nothing remains of the Putin Regime.
No mercy. No compassion. No remorse.
As awful as it is to hear from tdfg, it’s necessary to know what stupidity escapes his mind out to his crazed followers.
Definitely ill prepared to be a leader of a country. Totally unprepared to be a member of our species.
What totally blows me away about this every time it happens is these people listen to this horseshit and throw more money at him.
I’m beginning to think (okay, have been thinking for quite a while) that money totally scrambles people’s brains.
Honor ain’t got nothing to do with it. He’s just a goddamn moron spewing horsehit, testing out new jokes before he takes them on the road.
I believe your report, but is there a link to these comments?
He was musing, but I don’t think he was joking.
and a man with no friends (in any meaningful sense of the word).
Google their names. They were interviewed on CNN. Sorry I’m a digitally challenged old hippie who doesn’t do links.
He doesn’t joke. He doesn’t even smile.
At least three members of a family were killed as a result of shelling in the town of Irpin, outside Kyiv, on Sunday. A Russian force advancing on Kyiv fired mortar shells at a battered bridge used by people fleeing the fighting. The attack happened after attempts to arrange a humanitarian corridor failed on Sunday morning.
Okay, I am starting to question my earlier assessment that the shelling of the evacuation route in Mariupol was down to command-and-control failures, instead of deliberate Schrecklichkeit.
